Summary of Duties:

The Research Intern will conduct cancer research under the direction and supervision of Dr. Weimin Li. This position will require performing experiments using biochemistry and molecular biology techniques, tissue cultures, different bioassays, animal models, and human tissue histopathological analysis.

This is a temporary position expected to end 8 months after the effective start date. Renewal is dependent on the need for extension and/or if additional funding is secured to extend.

75% - Laboratory Research

-Carry out experiments, assays, and data analysis of research project as directed.

-Work with tissue cultures, animal or human tissues, and research animals.

-Operate a variety of research equipment and laboratory electronic devices.

-Prepare laboratory materials, such as solutions and culture media, for projects.

-Keep up laboratory research protocols.

-Ensure lab conditions and equipment are properly cleaned and maintained in accordance with established procedures. Assist with general lab maintenance and cleaning.

-Order supplies, dispose of hazardous wastes, autoclave research materials/items or biohazard wastes when needed, and maintain inventories and research related files.

-Complete required trainings and follow Federal, State, institutional, college, and laboratory policies, rules, and protocols for working in the laboratory.

15% - Research Data

-Participate in laboratory, research, and collaboration meetings and prepare meeting materials as needed.

-Collect, record, verify data; compile information in support of research; apply knowledge and skills applicable to an assigned technical discipline.

-Assist faculty with the following: prepare research results and written summaries of results in manuscript form for publications and in graphics form for presentation at research meetings and for grant proposals.

-Attend joint meetings and conferences and presenting works as posters or talks at conferences.

-Assist in the development and design of research projects, protocols and experiments in the Principal Investigator’s lab. Oversee the daily activities of student employees.

5% - Grants and Scholarships

-Assisting the PI in grant applications, applying for scholarships/awards/grants.

-Other duties as required by laboratory practice and protocols

The College

The Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine is Washington’s premier community-based medical school. It is named after the university’s late president, Elson S. Floyd. Dr. Floyd believed that Washington State University, as the state’s land-grant institution, should train doctors to serve all of Washington.

Required Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field of study or equivalent related field experience performing professional-level work with scientific or clinical research protocols. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis. Experimental and analytical skills; understanding and knowledge of research theory; interviewing experience; excellent organizational and project management skills.

Additional Requirements:

-General knowledge in biology.

-Basic biochemistry and molecular biology research techniques and data analysis skills.

-Tissue culture experience.

-Experience of working with research animals, animal or human tissue samples.

-Basic skills and capabilities of using common laboratory equipment and computers.

-Excellent writing and verbal communication skills.

-Ability to work some evenings and weekends.

-Possession of a valid and current driver’s license by time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

-Strong technology aptitude including the ability to quickly learn application systems.

-Proficient in Microsoft Office including, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook.
