eLearning Specialist

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has an opening for an eLearning Specialist in the College of Media. This position will provide the College with in-house expertise to assist faculty with developing hybrid and online courses, provide on-going support to existing programs, and help the College innovate in teaching and learning in order to build on our current offerings. The eLearning Specialist is responsible for learning technology, classroom support, and online course development projects. This includes working directly with faculty on the design, development, and management of online courses; applying various learning theories, teaching strategies, instructional design models, best practices in online and in-person education; and integrating educational technologies to improve teaching effectiveness and student learning experiences. The eLearning Specialist also contributes to the overall growth and improvement of Media Tech’s services.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities:

e-Learning Technology Support

  • Provide learning technology support to College of Media faculty, staff, and students.
  • Develop and support accessible new and existing online classes, webinars, and workshops in LMS.
  • Train others in the understanding and use of online and in-person instructional platforms and tools.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of current and emerging technologies; implement those that will best support the College.
  • Serve as the team’s designated point-person for learning technologies by understanding and administering them as needed.

Student Support

  • Support students’ education and learning technology needs.
  • Understand how students use technology for learning and translate that to courses.

Other Tech Support

  • Work as a part of the team to address tier-one IT support issues using ticketing system.
  • Assist with equipment support as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Required: Bachelor’s degree in an educational technology or related field. One year of professional experience with educational technology. Experience working directly with faculty in higher education. Proven successful work experience in e-learning instructional design and development technology. Experience working as part of a team.

Preferred: Two or more years of professional experience in an educational technology field. Two or more years of experience working in a higher education setting. Online teaching experience. Broad knowledge of copyright and fair use laws, rules, and regulations. Experience with studio-level production equipment and systems. Knowledge of best practices in standards-compliant responsive web design, accessibility, user-experience design, information architecture, and graphic design.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Required: Familiarity with design, editing, video technology, post-production tools, web conferencing, and other multimedia. Familiarity with online collaboration tools and Learning Management Systems such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Compass, Blackboard, Canvas, Moodle. Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, students, and peers. Strong interpersonal skills and communication skills in person, via email, and via messaging applications. Familiarity with complex learning theories, assessment and evaluation methods, as well as a thorough understanding of learning styles. Strong verbal and written skills. Actively collaborative approach that integrates expertise in educational technology with the broader educational goals of faculty, staff, and students in a positive, constructive way.
