General Description of the Job Class

The Duke Regional Hospital (DRH) Nurse Practitioner (NP)/Physician Assistant (PA) (NP/PA) provides direct patient care services for complex critically ill adult patients in a mixed medical/surgical intensive care setting in collaboration with intensivist physicians. The NP/PA performs physical exams, collects and documents data, conducts diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, orders and schedules laboratory studies and professional consultations, prescribes appropriate interventions and medications, coordinates the care and discharge of patients, and provides direct patient care services. The NP/PA contributes to excellence in patient care, research, teaching, and provides leadership to the organization.


The NP/PA will report directly to the Critical Care Team Leader and Director. The NP/PA clinical practice is under the supervision of the supervising physician and will also work under the supervision of all back-up attending physician(s) listed in the Collaborative Practice/Supervising Physician Agreement.

  • Able to withstand prolonged standing and walking with the ability to move or lift at least fifty pounds.

  • Role model professionalism through conduct, appearance, communication, mutual respect, leadership, ethical decision-making, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

  • Demonstrate responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizations and continuing education. Enhance the body of knowledge to the NP/PA profession or other areas of specialization through exchange of ideas and knowledge in professional organizations, oral presentations, posters, research activities, and written publications.

Level Characteristics


Minimum Qualifications


Physician Assistant - Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program. A Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree strongly preferred.

Nurse Practitioner - Work requires completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program, with a Master's degree in Nursing. Adult-Gerontology Acute Care NP Master's strongly preferred.


Physician Assistant - 1 Year as a Physician Assistant in a critical care setting required.

Nurse Practitioner - 1 Year of Experience in an ICU setting (RN or NP), 3 years of experience strongly preferred.

Degrees, Licensures, Certifications

Must have current or compact RN licensure in the state of North Carolina. BLS required. National certification as a NP required prior to or within 6 months of employment. Certification as an Acute Care or Critical Care Nurse Practitioner strongly preferred.
