Stevens Institute of Technology

Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

Hoboken, New Jersey

Stevens Institute of Technology (Stevens) is seeking an energetic and experienced academic and administrative leader as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs (Provost). The next Provost will join Stevens at a time of strong positive momentum. The successful candidate will be the President’s principal partner in pursuing Stevens’ goals to increase its impact and to continue its progress toward becoming a premier, student-centric research university.

Since the university’s founding in 1870, technological innovation has been the hallmark of Stevens’ educational and research programs. Stevens comprises four schools: the Charles V. Schaefer, Jr. School of Engineering and Science; the School of Business; the School of Systems and Enterprises; and the College of Arts and Letters. Across these schools, more than 7,200 undergraduate and graduate students collaborate with more than 300 faculty members in an interdisciplinary, student-centric, entrepreneurial environment to advance the frontiers of science and leverage technology to confront global challenges. Stevens is home to two national research centers of excellence, as well as joint research programs focused on critical industries such as healthcare, energy, finance, defense and security, STEM education, and coastal sustainability.

The university’s 10-year strategic plan, entitled The Future. Ours to Create., was launched in 2012 and updated in 2017. The plan charted a course for Stevens, setting high expectations for engagement and excellence for all key stakeholders. National attention to the outstanding quality and outcomes of a Stevens education continues to grow, and Stevens is consistently ranked as one of the nation’s top universities for return on investment for students, career services programs, and mid-career salaries of alumni. In 2018, Stevens was honored by the American Council on Higher Education with its award for institutional transformation, and the university was listed in the “25 Top STEM Colleges” by Forbes. Other rankings can be seen at stevens.edu/about-stevens/rankings-and-recognition.

These developments have resulted in tremendous growth in both undergraduate and graduate demand in the last decade. Applications have grown at a cumulative rate of nearly 200% in 10 years and selectivity has increased sharply, as have SAT scores for undergraduate students. The number of undergraduate students has increased by nearly 60% and full-time equivalent graduate student enrollment is up 39% in the last decade. As such, net tuition revenue at both the undergraduate and graduate level has increased significantly and further strengthened the university’s financial position, which has remained strong despite the pandemic. Research revenue has also grown steadily at a rate of about 12% per year and exceeded $46 million in the last fiscal year.

With the opportunity to build on the successes of the last strategic plan, the Provost will join Stevens at a pivotal time and play a critical role in developing the university’s next 10-year strategic plan for 2022-32.

Reporting to the President and acting as the second-highest administrative leader at the university, the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs serves as Stevens’ chief academic officer. The Provost is responsible for the academic integrity of the institution, all programs and administrative offices related to the academic enterprise, as well as long-range academic strategic planning and new initiatives in consultation with faculty, officers, and trustees. The Provost also collaborates with the Deans and others to lead cross-disciplinary activities, innovations in teaching, and the expansion of Stevens’ research and its impact. In addition to an outstanding record of scholarly achievement, the successful candidate will possess a deep interest in shaping the future of higher education through innovative, collaborative, and bold leadership.
