Description of Work:

The Research Assistant Professor will contribute to the integrated research land-grant mission of the home unit and the IANR, as an effective scholar and citizen, including supporting student recruitment and IANR science literacy. This is a 12 month, non-tenure leading position with renewal contingent upon satisfactory performance and available funding.

Overall goals of this research are to develop practices to increase profitability, productivity and sustainability or cropping systems in Nebraska, across the US and globally through improving pesticide application techniques to minimize pest control failures, evolution of resistance and improper or inadequate pesticide application techniques. Investigations of pest management, pesticide application, or other pesticide applicator input decisions as affected by pest management in irrigation and rainfed production will be expected. Provide leadership for proactive efforts to obtain external funding and graduate student training are expectations of this work.

Expected scholarship includes communication of research in peer-reviewed journals, presentations at scientific conferences, supervision of graduate student research, and/or development of educational programs that effectively convey research findings to clientele and/or students. Participation in recruitment of potential students to the University of Nebraska is an expectation of all faculty at the University of Nebraska. The incumbent is expected to obtain grant funds to maintain active programs in research as well as support graduate student training.

As appropriate to the appointment, the incumbent will: develop a high-impact, nationally and internationally recognized research program in cropping systems; seek and establish effective disciplinary and transdisciplinary collaborations including effective integration with research groups, extension action teams, and/or educational programming; connect with stakeholders, agency, and/or industry partners to strengthen research, extension, and/or educational programming activities; mentor graduate students; publish in high-quality, high-impact peer-reviewed journals, and participate in scientific meetings and other appropriate professional activities; and, translate research-based information into learner-centered products. This includes: creating scholarly, innovative, and high impact learning programs and tools; identifying issues and opportunities focused on learner needs and emerging regional and national issues with international relevance; measuring the impact of programs and communicating results to administrators, stakeholders, users, and media; and, mentoring colleagues through professional development, translational research, grants, and professional writing.

In addition to the above-described duties, the individual will be expected to accept committee assignments, reporting responsibilities, and other special ad hoc assignments as requested at the administrative unit, college/division, institute, and/or university level.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

PhD in Weed Science or a closely related field.
Experience designing field trials
Demonstrated data management and analysis skills
Demonstrated publication record

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with pesticide application technology research and pesticide application techniques
Pesticide applicator license
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
