The Dalla Lana School of Public Health is a Faculty of the University of Toronto that originated as one of the Schools of Hygiene begun by the Rockefeller Foundation in 1927. The School went through a dramaticrenaissance after the 2003 SARS crisis and it is now the largest public health school in Canada, with more than 850 faculty, 1,000 students, and research and training partnerships with institutions throughout Toronto and the world. With $40.4 million in research funding per year, the School supports discovery in global health, tobacco impacts on health, occupational disease and disability, air pollution, inner city and Indigenous health, among many other areas.

Your opportunity:

The Division of Occupational and Environmental Health (OEH) comprises a multidisciplinary group whose aim is to aid in the prevention of occupational and environmental disease emphasizing exposure measurement.

Since the onsetof the pandemic, OEH has been finding ways to reduce the exposure of health care workers at the frontlines to airborne viruses. One such project the OEH has embarked is the creation of aerosol testing facility.

As OEH Lab Technician, you will support the aerosol testing facility in the OEH division to help address the shortages of respirators by exploring ways to extend the use of respirators. You will ensure efficient and consistent operations of the aerosol testing equipment including testing, calibrating, adapting and analyzing aerosol testing results. Many of the testing procedures you will be conducting are standardized testing methods, requiring a high attention to detail and stringent adherence to established protocols. Other testing methods may be developed or adapted in response to specific needs. Relying on your sound scientific and technical skills and your strong communication skills, you will ensure operational excellence in a dynamic, high-compliance work environment amongst staff, students and faculty.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Applying established standards when preparing routine samples for research projects and/or experiments
  • Collaborating with staff and courseinstructors to determine lab set up requirements along with collecting and analyzing data
  • Applying established standards when cleaning lab, rooms and equipment
  • Troubleshooting routine equipment issues during lab sessions
  • Preparing, assembling and setting-up material, equipment and supplies according to the needs of the facility
  • Paying close attention to occupational safety precautions

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in mechanical engineering or acceptable combination of equivalent experience
  • Minimum one year of relevant laboratory experience
  • Demonstrated experience supporting labs, including setup of equipment and preparing routine samples
  • Experience serving as a resource and providing orientation to users on work procedures and practices
  • Familiarity with quality standards for metrology and laboratory testing (ISO/IEC 17025:2017) and laboratory proficiency testing (ISO/IEC 17043:2010)
  • Understanding of engineering principles including fluid dynamics and aerosol science
  • Fluency in statistical methods as applied to quality assurance
  • High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • High level of lab equipment knowledge
  • Strong knowledge of health and safety regulations, experience applying lab safety and protocol procedures
  • Excellent oral and written English communication skills and strong interpersonal skills
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently, and take initiative to meet deadlines and ensure issues are addressed in a timely manner
  • Must work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team, have excellent time management skills, soundjudgment, exemplary organizational skills, and a commitment to research

Assets (Nonessential):

  • Familiarity with design and fabrication of 3D printed or CNC machined parts
  • Prior work experience in the manufacturing sector or GMP-regulated environment
