Job Description:
Groundskeeper:

Plants, maintains and mows lawns; trims and prunes shrubs, hedges and trees; edges lawns and borders.

Waters landscaped areas including lawns, shrubs and trees; rakes leaves and pulls weeds.

Prepares and cultivates soil for planting using fertilizers as needed; sprays herbicides and pesticides according to established procedures; sets traps for pest control.

Participates in sprinkler installation, maintenance and repair; may prepare and restore grounds for various grounds-related projects as assigned.

Prepares and maintains athletic fields and related facilities; cleans and maintains gutters and storm drains; removes paper, trash and other debris from grounds areas.

Assists in setting up equipment and facilities for special events; maintains routine records related to work activities.

Operates and maintains a variety of hand and basic power equipment including mowers, edges, pruners, power sweepers, blowers, forklifts, trucks, and other grounds equipment.

Learns and applies emerging technologies and as necessary to perform duties in an efficient, organized, and timely manner.

Participate in District/College efforts to increase the diversity of faculty and staff and to address student achievement gaps; active assistance in the creation of a welcoming and inclusive work and educational environment; attend and participate in diversity, equity and inclusion trainings and events.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Irrigation Specialist:

Installs, repairs, builds and modifies irrigation systems on athletic field; plans and designs new irrigation systems.

Maintains, repairs or replaces irrigation equipment as needed including pumps, electronic and electro-mechanical controllers, valves, sprinkler lines, sprinkler heads, backflow devices and related equipment; repairs or replaces wiring.

Cleans blockages from valves, sprinkler heads and irrigation lines.

Resolves problems concerning irrigation systems; troubleshoots and performs preventive maintenance to assure proper operation of irrigation systems; demonstrates the proper use of systems to appropriate personnel.

Communicates with various contractors, vendors, grounds personnel and other District personnel to discuss and resolve irrigation systems problems and to coordinate work activities.

Maintains inventory of parts, tools and equipment for repair and installation work; estimates time and materials needed; orders and purchases parts and equipment.

Trains and provides work direction and guidance to others as directed.

Prepares and maintains records related to labor and materials.

Learns and applies emerging technologies and advances as necessary to perform duties in an efficient, organized, and timely manner.

Participate in District/College efforts to increase the diversity of faculty and staff and to address student achievement gaps; active assistance in the creation of a welcoming and inclusive work and educational environment; attend and participate in diversity, equity and inclusion trainings and events.

Primary Purpose:
Groundskeeper:

This position is responsible for performing general maintenance duties on District grounds including landscaped areas, athletic fields and facilities.

Irrigation Specialist:

This position is responsible for performing skilled work in the installation, repair, building, modifying, planning and designing of irrigation systems to assure proper irrigation to District grounds and athletic fields.


Working Relationships:
Groundskeeper:

The Groundskeeper completes assigned tasks under the direction of a supervisor.

Irrigation Specialist:

The Irrigation Specialist maintains frequent contact with District grounds and maintenance personnel, and outside vendors and contractors.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Groundskeeper:

Knowledge of tools, materials and equipment utilized in grounds keeping work

Knowledge of common plants found on District grounds

Knowledge of cultivating, fertilizing, watering and spraying trees, shrubs and flowers

Ability to operate and maintain grounds equipment and sprinkler systems

Ability to learn and maintain appropriate record-keeping techniques

Ability to use assigned methods for control and eradication of plant pests, rodents and weeds

Ability to plan, organize and prioritize work

Ability to meet schedules and time lines

Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others

Irrigation Specialist:

Knowledge of principles, methods, techniques and specialized equipment used in the installation and repair of irrigation systems

Knowledge of pumps, flow valves, pressure switches, time clock controller and related equipment

Knowledge of water requirements for lawns, trees, plants and various types of soil

Knowledge of how to operate and maintain remote control valves and electronic control systems

Knowledge of basic electrical theory

Knowledge of rules of backflow prevention

Knowledge of health and safety regulations

Ability to diagnose malfunctions and correct deficiencies in irrigation systems and peripheral equipment

Ability to work from blueprints, shop drawings and sketches

Ability to plan, organize and prioritize work

Ability to meet schedules and time lines

Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others


Special Requirements:
This position requires a valid driver’s license. Incumbent may be required to travel off site for business reasons. All employees driving personal, leased, or district-owned vehicles for District related activities must certify possession of a valid Driver’s License. Employees must certify that personal vehicles are covered by automobile insurance as required by California law. (Administrative Procedure 7400, Section 4.0)

TRAINING REQUIREMENTS (After hire):

Electric Cart Certification

Backflow Prevention Certification (must be obtained within six months from date of hire as a condition of continued employment)


Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED

Groundskeeper:

Sufficient grounds experience to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities listed.

Irrigation Specialist:

Any combination of training and experience equivalent to three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience in the installation and repair of irrigation systems.


Desirable Qualifications:
Prior experience in approaching work and interactions with colleagues and/or students in an equity minded manner. Ability to provide an inclusive and welcoming work/educational environment.

Demonstrated experience integrating diversity, equity, and inclusion into the duties and responsibilities for this position.


Working Conditions:
Groundskeeper:

Outdoor environment; subject to adverse weather conditions; subject to frequent lifting (up to 70 lbs. unassisted), standing, bending, carrying, pushing and pulling; exposure to high levels of noise from equipment; exposure to hazardous chemicals and materials as well as various insects. May be required to wear a respirator or other safety equipment in execution of duties.

Irrigation Specialist:

Outdoor environment; traveling from site-to-site; subject to adverse weather conditions; subject to lifting (up to 50 pounds unassisted), standing, bending, climbing, digging, pulling, pushing, and exposure to chemical fumes.


Salary Range: $3,852 - $4,667 per Month
