Professional Research Assistant

The Department of Orthopedics has an opening for a full time Professional Research Assistant (PRA).  The position will be part of several orthopedic research studies evaluating the etiology of inflammatory joint diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.

Examples of Work Performed

  • Participant recruitment into a clinical trial aimed at testing a microbiome-based treatment for osteoarthritis
  • Participant recruitment into the Military and Veterans Microbiome Consortium of Research and Education (MVM-CoRE) and subsequent collection of fecal samples for analysis and use in a DOD grant entitled Targeting the Gut Microbiome to Treat Osteoarthritis
  • Surgeon coordination, participant recruitment, and tissue collection for the Interdisciplinary Joint Biology Program biobank and the Surgical Discard Tissue and Nucleic Acid biorepository
  • Coordination of tissue preparation, nucleic acid extraction and storage in collaboration with the Tissue and Molecular Imaging Core in the Department of Orthopedics.

  • Outstanding interpersonal skills
  • Excellent attention to detail, strong organizational and recordkeeping skills
  • Professional comportment in the confidential recruitment of patients into studies
  • Ability to work independently as well as a part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Positive attitude with the desire to advance research
  • Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in biological science or related field
  • A minimum of 2 years' experience working in a wet lab
  • Prior blood processing lab and sample management experience
  • Experience with web-based tracking systems (i.e. REDCap) and Microsoft Office
  • Experience developing, amending and executing human protocols, and interaction with the COMIRB in each of these aspects
  • Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Cell/tissue culture experience
  • Tissue processing experience, including histology sectioning and staining (paraffin and cryo) and immunohistochemistry
  • qPCR experience
  • Experience performing flow cytometry and other tissue/blood analytic platforms
  • Experience sampling, handling and processing human fecal material
