PURPOSE The VP Academic Affairs (VPAA) is the Chief Academic Officer of the institution and reports to the President of the College. This person is responsible for the development, presentation, evaluation, and modification of the curriculum of the College as well as of the faculty of the College for both in-class and online curricular requirements. The VPAA coordinates and interacts with the various heads of Student Success and Student Services to facilitate the instructional needs of the faculty and the student body. The VPAA also interfaces with the VPCO of the Health Center and with other executive leaders of the College. The VPAA is responsible for ensuring compliance with all matters of accreditation and state authorization and approval by any and all licensing entities related to the chiropractic profession and those of higher education.

The VPAA is the Chair of the Academic Planning Group (APG), an ex-officio member of all College committees, and the appeal point for all formal actions of the Student Judiciary Committee.

The VPAA meets regularly with the President, the department chairs, and other senior administrators and leaders of the College. The VPAA, in cooperation with the Chief Financial Officer, is responsible for the development of the education and general expenditures portion of the College’s budget.

The VPAA supervises the support staff related to the VPAA’s Office, the support staff related to the faculty offices, and the instructional support personnel.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Maintain congruence between the College's board-approved mission statement and all academic activities including the Student Success initiatives (Housing, Work-Study program, Student Life, etc.) and Student Services operations (Registrar, Financial Aid, etc.).
  2. Advise, counsel, and oversee any and all matters concerning the Admissions process for the testing, interviewing, and evaluating of applicants for enrollment.
  3. Oversee the Enrollment department, the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching Technology department (CELTT), the Director of Institutional Research and Assessment, and the Dean of Academic Faculty.
  4. Be a thoughtful leader and an active implementer for developing and leading efforts towards building Master’s and Ph.D. online programs for the College.
  5. Act as the academic leader of the College. Be responsible for its day-to-day operation: schedule students and oversee the academic advising and College counseling programs; monitor student academic progress; convoke "swat" teams to address student academic emergencies; and coordinate the efforts of department heads and the Academic Affairs committee.
  6. Manage day-to-day conflicts in a professional and proficient manner.
  7. Observe, supervise, and help evaluate the faculty in the development and implementation of curriculum; supervise the teaching process; and review and evaluate the academic programs.
  8. Oversee and direct the activities of the department chairs, the sponsors of various student organizations and activities, and the faculty committees.
  9. Ensure compliance with the legal requirements of governmental regulations and agencies and maintain the educational standards established by those agencies that examine and accredit the College.
  10. Make recommendations to the President regarding the hiring, retention, and assignment of faculty.
  11. Establish programs for the orientation of new faculty, for the in-service training of all faculty, and for the evaluation of classroom faculty in order to ensure that instructors are familiar with and adhere to College policies in all areas of the College’s operation.
  12. Conduct regular meetings with faculty and department chairs, which deal with routine College matters and the stimulating exchange of ideas on issues of educational and philosophical interest and concern.
  13. Oversee the coordination of the co-curricular and extra-curricular activity programs of the College; assist with the planning and presentation of College assemblies and programs; assist in maintaining a comprehensive calendar of College events; and keep the entire College community informed of various College programs and activities.
  14. Provide for the academic guidance of students; maintain complete academic records on all students; and oversee the grading and reporting of standards and methods used by instructors and faculty in measuring student achievement.
  15. Prepare a master College class schedule and assign faculty and students to classes and other obligations.
  16. Serve as a consultant to faculty in matters of classroom management, teaching methods, and general College procedures;
  17. Support the College and its leadership.
  18. Other duties as assigned by the President.

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE: EDUCATION & TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

Education, Training, and/or Experience

  1. Doctorate preferred; Master’s Degree required,
  2. 10+ years of experience working in adult higher education programs.
  3. 10+ years of experience working in complex organizational environments, preferably higher education.
  4. A minimum of 5 years of experience influencing and working closely with executive-level leaders.
  5. Experience in teaching preferred.
  6. Compliance-minded with proven compliance-related experience.
  7. Experience in academic advising and counseling of adult students on curricular and degree completion requirements.
  8. Ability to demonstrate leadership abilities and administrative accomplishments in positions of increasing responsibility.
  9. Ability to work with faculty, staff, students, and College-wide constituencies.
  10. Ability to take initiative on projects, follow through on details, and balance various tasks simultaneously.
  11. Knowledge of computer technology and instructional learning systems, procedures, and policies.
  12. Proven track record of developing effective partnerships across disparate groups to organize and facilitate decisions and ensure implementation.
  13. Experience with governmental relations and external relations, especially accreditation entities such as WASC, CCE, etc.
  14. Experience in balancing strategic leadership with detailed involvement in support of accountabilities.
  15. Exceptional written, presentation, and verbal communication skills that can be applied across levels.
  16. Excellent demonstrated judgment and diplomacy in working with diverse groups to address complex issues.
  17. Highly-regarded people management skills.
  18. Unquestioned integrity.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Personal Characteristics

  1. Successful candidate will have experience making independent judgments.
  2. Ability to coordinate office detail in conjunction with policy. Proven experience handling highly confidential and sensitive materials and situations.
  3. Ability to master a wide range of relationships, tasks, and perspectives required. Increasing responsibility working with higher education executives at an academic institution is preferred.
  4. Must have exceptional organizational and analytical skills; demonstrate strong problem-solving skills; and be competent with a variety of Windows-based computer programs including MS Word and Excel.
  5. Must be able to work independently, prioritize work, and independently manage multiple and competing priorities while meeting deadlines.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  1. Nature of work requires an ability to operate standard business office equipment.
  2. Requires ability to communicate and exchange information; collect, compile, and prepare work documents; and set up and maintain work files.
  3. Must be able to lift 25 lbs., retrieving and placing materials on high shelves and on floor-level shelves; standing, walking, carrying, grasping, hearing, seeing, sitting, kneeling, climbing, balancing, stooping, crouching, and reaching.
