Job Description:

Summary of Position:
At the Trefethen Aquatic Center at Mills College, the lifeguard's main responsibility is to practice preventative lifeguarding to ensure the safety of all pool-users. When prevention is not enough, a lifeguard is to immediately respond to an emergency in a swift manner. Emergencies can range from minor first aid situations to life-threatening sudden illness. Whichever kind of emergency a lifeguard faces, it is critical they are competent and focused. In addition to the primary responsibilities of a lifeguard, all lifeguards at the Trefethen Aquatic Center are well versed in the facility's Pool Attendant duties and are able to step into that role when needed. In keeping with the Mills College Strategic Plan, the lifeguard helps to ensure that through training and enforcement, the Trefethen Aquatic Center is operated in a safe, compliant, and inclusive manner. Essential Job Functions:

  • Enforces facility rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Takes initiative to prevent emergencies and ensure safety.
  • Anticipates, recognizes, and reacts to all emergencies and provides necessary care.
  • Effectively scans their zone.
  • Sits and stands for extended periods of time while maintaining optimum scanning vigilance of the pool.
  • Upholds the American Red Cross standard of care in all aquatic emergencies.
  • Performs secondary responsibilities such as post-emergency paperwork.
  • Performs opening and closing tasks such as pool covers, checking chemicals, light cleaning, etc.
  • Teaches swim lessons as needed.
  • Addresses issues of concern with patrons.
  • If needed, finds an appropriate and approved staff member to substitute for scheduled shift at least 24 hours prior to scheduled shift.
  • Other duties and tasks as assigned by a supervisor for the benefit of the Aquatics Department.

Secondary Job Functions:
All lifeguards are subject to stepping into the Pool Attendant role as needed, which includes the following tasks:
  • Checks patrons in.
  • Manages and tracks transactions on CASHNet.
  • Signs patrons up for swim lessons, locker rentals, semester passes, and more.
  • Answers phone calls and responds to voicemails and in a timely fashion.
  • Knowledgeable of all pool rules and regulations to adequately answer patron's questions.
  • Maintains organization in the front office by taking initiative to clean area regularly.
  • Performs administrative tasks such as paperwork and filing when needed.
  • Responsible for laundering and folding pool towels and uniforms.
  • Responsible for calling EMS during an emergency and describing situation to dispatcher.
  • Other duties and tasks as assigned by a supervisor for the benefit of the Aquatics Department.

COVID-19 Tasks:
  • Must practice safe social distancing and wear a face covering at all times while on shift.
  • Assists pool staff in cleaning and disinfecting the facility before, during, and after shifts.
  • Is knowledgeable in the Trefethen Aquatic Center COVID-19 rules and regulations to adequately answer patron's questions.
  • Is knowledgeable in the swim reservation program and provides assistance in signing patrons up for swimming time slots.
  • Other duties and tasks as assigned.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Must have evening and weekend availability.
  • Must possess a professional behavior and be confident and firm when enforcing facility rules.
  • Must be prepared to remain calm and focused while responding to a life-threatening emergency.
  • As this position requires lifeguards to perform physically challenging duties, it is essential for lifeguards to prioritize a healthy lifestyle through eating well and exercising

Education and Training:
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification
  • Current American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer certification
  • Current American Red Cross First Aid certification
  • Current American Red Cross AED certification
  • Current American Red Cross Oxygen Administration certification (preferred)

Additional Information:

This is a temporary, part-time position that begins as soon as possible. Additional semester appointments are possible, based on job performance. Starting hourly wage begins at $14.50. Increases are based on periodic reviews and hours worked. Mandated benefits, including Social Security, State Disability Insurance, Workers' Compensation, Unemployment Insurance, and sick leave are included.
