Overview
Reporting to the Associate Dean of the College and Director of Programs for Access and Inclusion (PAI), the Assistant Director will collaborate with Princeton staff from across the University to provide support and external resource connection for Princeton students, especially first-generation, lower-income, DACA, and underrepresented students. In particular, the Assistant Director will focus on connecting students and their families with supportive resources external to the University. Located in the Office of the Dean of the College, PAI leads initiatives that advance Princeton's commitment to an inclusive student body, including the Freshman Scholars Institute, the Scholars Institute Fellows Program, and Programs for Veteran, Non-Traditional, and Transfer Students. The Assistant Director will also provide support to the high-school aged students in the Princeton Undergraduate Preparatory Program (PUPP) and college-aged students in external access programs. Primary responsibilities include: meeting with individual students to facilitate connection with external providers and social services as necessary, liaising with the Residential College advising teams to ensure ongoing and holistic support, and tracking/reporting the trends in student need.
Responsibilities
- Works with the Residential College advising team to provide support for students involved in Princeton's Programs for Access and Inclusion, the Princeton Undergraduate Preparatory Program (including minors), and others, primarily students who are first in their family to attend college, coming from a lower-income background, or identify as historically underrepresented at Princeton.
- Take referrals from students' primary advisors and take charge of helping students connect and manage relationships with external agencies, providers, and resources that supplement Princeton's internal support structures.
- Meets individually with and helps implement a plan for these students, who may be experiencing stress, mental health concerns, medical issues, and/or personal/family emergencies.
- Works in collaboration with a team of on-campus partners, including staff from University Health Services, the Office of the Dean for Undergraduate Students, and PUPP to support students, with the end goal of helping to create a long-term success plan by connecting students with appropriate resources.
- Takes the lead in engaging external, non-institutional providers and organizations to ensure appropriate support, interventions, referrals, and follow-up services and monitoring.
- Serves as a liaison between these offices and Programs for Access and Inclusion and other campus offices, creating structures for and facilitating appropriate and professional cross-campus communication and integrated support for students.
- Work closely with the Residential College Advising Staff and UHS to help support students taking leave in the transition off-campus, connecting them with local resources and opportunities.
- Works, as possible, with external providers and social services to connect students with necessary care and support outside of the University, particularly during times that they are away from campus.
- In the case of minor students, particularly those involved in the PUPP program, the Assistant Director will work with parents, guardians, and other family members to ensure that the student has the support necessary for long-term success and wellness.
- In order to ensure the development of inclusive institutional policy, programming, and procedure, the Assistant Director will advise on patterns and trajectories in student needs, looking particularly at emerging trends related to use of external resources.
- In collaboration with colleagues across the University, the Assistant Director will write regular reports and give regular presentations on these trends, informing the Associate Dean and other administrators about important developments.
