About the Center: The Boston University (BU) Center for Antiracist Research was founded by Ibram X. Kendi in July of 2020 to convene varied researchers and practitioners to figure out novel and practical ways to understand, explain, and solve seemingly intractable problems of racial inequity and injustice. Whereas racist research historically has posed the question “What is wrong with people?” antiracist research asks a different, better question: “What is wrong with policies?” Our belief is that framing research on race and racism around antiracist questions leads to antiracist narratives, effective policy solutions, and impactful advocacy campaigns that cut to the root of racial inequality: racist policy. We believe that the four pillars of research, policy, narrative, and advocacy--working in tandem from an antiracist perspective--can improve social, political, economic, and health outcomes for all, but especially the most marginalized. Deliberate policy choices have upheld systemic racism; they also have the potential to upend it.

Job Summary: Under the supervision of the Associate Director of Policy and the guidance of the Assistant Directors of Policy, the Fellow will conduct and interpret interdisciplinary research; draft policy products, including white papers, policy memos, model legislation and policies; draft amicus briefs; train, support, and maintain a pool of pro bono expert witnesses; help organize policy convenings of researchers, practitioners, and policymakers; develop and help facilitate continuing legal education seminars; and assist fundraising efforts including grant applications and donor cultivation. The first year of the fellowship will focus, in large part, on a multidimensional, intersectional antibigotry convening and policy project, as well as development of a law and justice initiative.

Qualifications: A J.D. and a demonstrated commitment to antiracist research, advocacy, or policy work are required. A Ph.D. or other graduate education or experience in policymaking and social science research is highly valued.
