The following describes our practice and academic settings as well as the metropolitan environment of Augusta, Georgia.

Practice Features:
The MFM practice is equipped with the latest ultrasound equipment, a state-of-the-art image archival and clinical reporting system and is supported by RDMS-certified sonographers, a genetics counselor, and a perinatal nurse coordinator. Our practice provides high-risk consultations comprehensive prenatal genetic screening and diagnosis, genetic and preconceptual counseling, and targeted ultrasound studies. There is a dedicated clinical area in the Ambulatory Care Center and off-campus office facilities in the community. The MFM practice has access to referrals from the greater Augusta area and the entire state of Georgia for selected fetal anomalies that will require pediatric specialty surgical treatment. The Augusta University Hospitals include a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery, dedicated Adult Intensive Care Units, a 12-bed labor and delivery unit, and a dedicated triage/obstetric emergency care unit.

Practice Model:

The Maternal-Fetal Medicine Section functions as a consultative service in coordination with the Section of General Obstetrics and Gynecology and outside referring physicians. Hospitalized antepartum patients are seen in consultation on an as needed basis while some selected patients may be followed exclusively by the MFM service. While most deliveries and minor procedures such as D&Cs and cerclages may be performed by the general obstetricians, selected patients followed by the MFM service may receive global care by its faculty members.

Research Opportunities

The MFM Section has access to a large clinical database of obstetric patients that has been collected and curated over the past two decades. In addition, there are a number of basic science and translational laboratories that have successfully collaborated with the MFM Section and the Department has two full-time faculty that are basic scientists. The Section has a long history of well-recognized research in the basic sciences as well as clinical projects in the areas of antenatal and intrapartum surveillance, preterm labor, and computer applications in obstetric care.

Faculty Job Responsibilities

In addition to clinical responsibilities, a new faculty member will be afforded protected time for academic development and research.
