Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, health care or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned and a minimum of three years' research and/or clinical experience; previous supervisory experienceKnowledge, Skills, & Abilities Ability to manage and schedule resourcesWillingness and ability to work with lab animalsAbility to maintain confidentiality; Detail orientedExtensive knowledge of laboratory procedures and protocolsExcellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skillsProficient with Microsoft Office and other computer software/databasesAbility to manage project expenses, reagents, equipment and other suppliesPreferred Extensive knowledge of laboratory procedures and protocols including all equipment used in the conduct of the research protocols; Experience in research related to aging/bone.Responsibilities The Research Associate coordinates the activities of trainees and technicians in the laboratory; Provides administrative support of research initiatives; Performs, plans and executes independent studies; Develops and evaluates new research techniques and procedures; Ensures compliance with rules and regulations pertaining to use of biohazardous materials and oversees the use of the materials and equipment in the laboratory. The duties include but are not limited to:
- Research scientific literature regarding current understanding of experimental paradigms; Conduct experiments, analyze results and summarize findings; Prepare findings for presentations at national and international meetings, publication and grantsCoordinate research activities and procedures of staff, graduate and summer students by continuous discussion amongst lab members; Participate in project planning and development of research protocols; Develop and evaluate new techniques and proceduresAdvise Principal Investigators, postdoctoral fellows, students and technicians in research techniques and procedures; Assist trainees and other technicians with analysis of project dataEnsure compliance with rules and regulations pertaining to use of biohazardous materials, chemicals, anesthetic drugs and experimental animals; Oversee use of materials, equipment, etc.Order supplies and equipment; Maintain and trouble shoot equipment; Maintain chemical and equipment inventoriesPerform a variety of genetic, genomic and cell biological experiments to study the MCMV and Herpes virus involved in Eye Disease; Maintain mouse lines for eye-related researchPerform all other duties as assigned
