Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, health care or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned and a minimum of three years' research and/or clinical experience; previous supervisory experienceKnowledge, Skills, & Abilities Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skillsExcellent organizational skills and writing skills for submission of grants and manuscriptsAbility to maintain confidentialityAbility and willingness to work with research animalsProficient in Microsoft Office and other computer/software databasesAbility to manage and schedule resources and manage project expenses, reagents, equipment and other suppliesExtensive knowledge of laboratory procedures and protocols including all equipment used in the conduct of the research protocolsAbility to effectively interact with principal investigator and other individuals (faculty, technicians, trainees and pre-doctoral and postdoctoral fellows)Detail oriented, ability to supervise and coordinate activities of students, graduate assistants and other employees in the laboratory, prioritize and meet deadlinesPreferred Qualifications Knowledge of Augusta University/MCG policies and procedures that govern grant expenditures, grant submissions: Ability to manage laboratory.Responsibilities Coordinate activities of trainees and technicians in the laboratory; provide administrative support of research initiatives; perform, plan and execute independent studies; develop and evaluate new research techniques and procedures; ensure compliance with rules and regulations pertaining use of biohazardous materials; oversee the use of materials and equipment in the laboratory.The duties include, but are not limited to:
- Research scientific literature regarding current understanding of experimental paradigms; conduct experiments, analyze results, and summarize findings; prepare finding for presentations at national and international meetings, publications and grants.Coordinate research activities and procedures of staff, graduate and summer students by continuous discussion amongst all lab members. Participate in project planning and development of research protocols; develop and evaluate new techniques and procedures.Advise Principal Investigators, post-doctoral fellows, students and technicians in research techniques and procedures.Ensure compliance with rules and regulations pertaining to us of biohazardous materials (Biological safety), chemicals (chemical safety), anesthetic drugs (DEA; IACUC), and experimental animals (LAS: IACUC); oversee use of materials, equipment, etc.Order supplies and equipment; maintain and trouble shoot equipment; maintain chemical and equipment inventories.Perform a variety of genetic, genomic, and cell biological experiments to study the MCMV and Herpes virus s involved in Eye Disease; maintain mouse lines for eye-related research.Maintenance and upkeep research protocols for human and mouse research.Perform all other duties as assigned.
