Primary Function of Organizational Unit:

There are two undergraduate majors within the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences. We currently have 27 full time faculty members in the department with about 420 undergraduate biology majors, 100 environmental science majors, and an M.S. program in biology with approximately 30 students pursuing thesis and non-thesis degrees.

Primary Purpose of Position:

This tenure track position will support the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences at Georgia College & State University and the programming needs in Cell and Molecular Biology. This highly trained individual will have a commitment to the liberal arts education, who can demonstrate excellence in teaching and research, and possess the ability to work collegially and effectively with a culturally diverse faculty, staff and student population. Teaching responsibilities will include 12 contact hours/semester. Primary teaching responsibilities will be Genetics and Cell & Molecular Physiology, with other teaching opportunities including core curriculum and lower level biology courses for majors as well as upper level and graduate courses in the candidate’s area of expertise. This position will have the opportunity to develop an independent research program using the facilities in our brand-new Integrated Science Complex building.
The Department of Biological & Environmental Sciences resides in the College of Arts and Sciences, the largest of the university’s four colleges.  Approximately 195 full-time faculty in 12 departments teach 3,000 students with majors encompassing arts and humanities, social and behavioral sciences, sciences and mathematics, fine and performing arts, and select professional programs.

Proposed Minimum Experience/Education:

Ph.D. preferred (ABD with Ph.D. completed by employment start date will be considered) in Biological Sciences or related field.
Research experience (demonstrated by publication record).
Undergraduate teaching experience.
Must meet SACSCOC accreditation requirements stated in C.S. 3.7.1 (www.sacscoc.org (faculty credentials))

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education:

We are particularly interested in candidates who can teach introductory biology courses and contribute to the core curriculum, as well as teach Genetics, Cell and Molecular Physiology, Organismal Physiology, Molecular Biology, and Molecular Biotechniques.
The ability to teach undergraduate level chemical biology is a plus.
Research interests in eukaryotic cell biology and/or molecular biology that engages undergraduate and graduate students is preferred.
At least one year of experience teaching college-level courses.
The department is especially interested in candidates whose experience, research, teaching, and service can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community.
