Primary Function of Organizational Unit:

The mission of the Department of Art is to prepare our students to be arts practitioners with the skills and values that will make them active and responsible participants in society. The intent is to educate graduates to engage in questions of self-expression, artisanship, identity, community, values, politics, and meaning.

The Department of Art is committed to delivering excellence in teaching, scholarly activity, university/community service, and the delivery of instruction. The department offers a balance of studio work, history and theory courses, and organizes them around a combination of activities, which include exposure to: various teaching methods, visiting artist experiences, contemporary art through campus galleries, independent learning opportunities, and senior projects.

The Department of Art is positioned within the College of Arts and Sciences, which is the largest of the University’s four colleges. Approximately 195 full-time faculty teach 3,000 students in thirteen departments, with majors encompassing the arts and humanities, social and behavioral sciences, sciences and mathematics, fine and performing arts, and select professional programs.

The Department of Art consists of four areas of program study and serves over 100 undergraduate majors. Courses are taught by eleven permanent and full-time faculty from the fields of Art History, Graphic Design, Museum Studies, and Studio Art. Our faculty embrace diversity, interdisciplinarity, multiculturalism, and community engagement in our teaching, research, and service. The department is housed in a new, multi-million dollar facility that boasts gallery space, studios, and lecture rooms scaled for our small class sizes.

Primary Purpose of Position:

The Department of Art invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in the field of Graphic Design. Teaching load is three courses per semester with some sections that may be combined. Duties include introductory courses, courses in the candidate’s areas of expertise, senior capstone supervision, and expectations for research and service. Special consideration will be given to applicants with a global perspective in their teaching and research. Opportunities for curriculum development and additional support through funding for research, professional research leave (i.e. sabbatical), student assistantships, study abroad, and summer teaching are available.

Job duties performed for the above function:

Teaching Responsibilities
- Teach courses in the discipline
– Mentor students
– Contribute to the core curriculum.

Courses will include Core, foundations and graphic design media such as web design, interactive design, typography, and motion media. The successful candidate will teach a 3/3 load while maintaining an active research agenda and service to the department, college, and university.

The primary purpose of this position is to teach courses and provide expertise within the academic discipline. All Georgia College faculty share the responsibility of teaching our core curriculum and/or providing foundation courses for majors and non-majors alike. To carry out our public liberal arts mission, we seek faculty with the desire and ability to engage students as they launch their intellectual journey.

This faculty member may also contribute to the Georgia College core curriculum by teaching topical first-year (GC1Y) or sophomore seminar (GC2Y) courses, and/or Core courses in Art Appreciation.

All faculty are expected to stay current in their field, develop within the profession, and produce artistic and academic-related scholarship.

Job duties performed for the above function:

All faculty are expected to support the advancement of the department, college and university mission by providing service to the institution. Service may be at the department, college, university, community and disciplinary level.
