Position Summary:

The Integrative Program for Biological & Genome Sciences (iBGS) operates at the interface between the UNC-CH School of Medicine and the College of Arts & Sciences to support research that works towards a mechanistic understanding of basic biological processes, thereby generating discoveries that fuel the translational research pipeline. iBGS is uniquely well situated to support and promote the integration of fundamental new discoveries with etiological and therapeutic efforts by clinician-scientists to combat human disease.

The laboratory of Dr. Rob Dowen ( studies how energy resources are allocated between biological processes to ensure cellular and organismal energy homeostasis. The Dowen Lab is affiliated with the Department of Cell Biology & Physiology, the Department of Biology, and the Integrative Program in Biological and Genome Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The Dowen Lab ( at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks a Postdoctoral Research Associate to study the molecular regulation of metabolism and aging.

We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with PhD training in molecular, cellular, or developmental biology. This individual will perform research on the mechanisms that control lipid homeostasis in C. elegans and will develop expertise in cellular signaling, development, and aging using genetic and functional genomic approaches. The candidate could initiate a new project or contribute to ongoing projects, including: 1) Investigating how pro-growth signaling regulates lipid metabolism pathways, 2) Identifying the molecular mechanisms that mediate metabolic trade-offs during development and aging, and 3) Understanding how gut microbiota engage metabolic pathways to control growth and aging. See these recent publications for additional information (Dowen 2019, Dev Cell; Dowen, et al. 2016 Genes & Dev). This individual will display critical thinking and leadership skills as they guide research projects to publication.

Application materials should include a CV, cover letter (with summary of research experiences, future interests and availability date), reprints of publications, and contact information for three references. The application materials should be uploaded on the UNC Human Resources website under this posting and emailed directly to Dr. Rob Dowen ([email protected]).

Educational Requirements:

PhD in Biomedical Sciences, Biology, or a related discipline is required.

Qualifications and Experience:

Qualifications include knowledge of advanced molecular biology techniques, biochemistry, genomics, and genetics. Knowledge of and experience with C. elegans is also desired. A strong publication record is also necessary.

Equal Opportunity Employer:

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to age, color, disability, gender, gender expression, gender identity, genetic information, race, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, or status as a protected veteran.
