Scope of Job:
The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences (SMSS) at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) invites applications for two postdoctoral positions in the areas of applied/computational mathematics and statistics. Candidates should have recently received a PhD in mathematics, applied/computational mathematics, statistics, or related fields and should demonstrate excellent research potential and capacity for effective teaching.
The SMSS is part of the College of Sciences at UTRGV. With over 182 faculty and 4,000 undergraduate and graduate students, the College of Sciences takes pride in preparing students for diverse careers. SMSS faculty have active research programs in statistics, pure and applied mathematics, and mathematics education with over 40 tenure-track and tenured faculty. The school offers multiple graduate and undergraduate degrees in statistics and mathematics and is developing a new Ph.D. program in Mathematics and Statistics with Interdisciplinary Applications, currently at the final stages of approval. Excellent opportunities exist for collaborations with colleagues in several colleges and departments across the university. These include the School of Medicine, School of Nursing, College of Health Professions, College of Sciences, College of Engineering and Computer Science, and the College of Business and Entrepreneurship. SMSS faculty closely collaborate with researchers from the South Texas Institute of Diabetes and Obesity, Doctor's Hospital at Renaissance, and the University of Texas School of Public Health.


Description of Duties:
The following is a listing of typical duties that may be applicable to the position:

The emphasis of these positions is on research related to the Mathematical and Statistical Sciences and applications of these disciplines. The teaching load will be one to two courses per semester. The positions are for one (1) year with the possibility of renewal for up to three (3) years based on performance and funding availability.


Supervision Received:
General supervision from immediate faculty supervisor.

Supervision Given:
None.

Required Education:
Applicants must have Ph.D. in Mathematics, Applied/Computational Mathematics, Statistics, or related fields from an accredited university, with at least 18 graduate hours in a mathematics content area. Ph.D. candidates will be considered, but the degree should be awarded no later than the proposed starting date.

Preferred Education:
Applicants with research interests in applied/computational mathematics with emphasis in interdisciplinary research. Teaching experience and the ability to use technology to support teaching and learning are preferred. Faculty will be expected to contribute to the upcoming Ph.D. program in Mathematics and Statistics with Interdisciplinary Applications likely to be launched in Fall 2021.

Required Experience:
A commitment to excellence in both research and teaching as well as a dedication to providing service to the community and profession.


Preferred Experience:
Teaching experience and the ability to use technology to support teaching and learning are preferred.


Equipment:
Use of personal computer and proficiency in software and research statistical applications.


Working Conditions:
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Standard office environment.


Other:

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 in a historic move that brings together the resources and assets of UT Brownsville and UT Pan American and, for the first time, makes it possible for residents of the Rio Grande Valley to benefit from the Permanent University Fund—a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and the Texas A&M University System.

 

Our new university will also be home to a School of Medicine and will transform Texas and the nation by becoming a leader in student success, teaching, research, and health care. UTRGV will enroll its first class in the fall of 2015, and the School of Medicine will open in 2016.

 

UT Brownsville and UT Pan American

The shared history of The University of Texas Pan American and The University of Texas at Brownsville goes back to 1927, when Edinburg College was founded. In 1973, Pan American opened a second campus in Brownsville, which later became an independent institution of The University of Texas System in 1991. Over the years, the missions and the identities of these great institutions have continually evolved to serve the communities of the Rio Grande Valley.

Now, the evolution and connection between these two institutions is coming full circle as UT Brownsville and UT Pan American are being established as a single, new university and medical school, with a single, new identity—The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
