Position Overview:

Reporting to the Provost, the University Librarian is responsible for the overall management, leadership, and advocacy of the Rebecca Crown Library. The University Librarian supports and leads faculty librarians and library staff in the mission and vision of the library and learning commons through advocacy, professional development, mentorship, and inclusion. A commitment to the Dominican University mission, vision, and strategic plan is required. The UL will demonstrate commitment and enthusiasm in providing compassionate service and equal access to services, resources, and facilities to all library users and will actively support cultural competencies, diversity, equity and inclusion in higher education and library services.

Responsibilities of the University Librarian:

  • Advocates for the Library as the center of academic life, innovation, and student success on campus; participates in fundraising efforts for library and archival facilities and resources; and represents the University to various external consortia and associations
  • Supports the University's strategic plan and the academic curriculum of all schools and colleges by providing a robust, state-of-the-art learning environment with equitable access to resources for students, faculty, and staff, and promotes information literacy and librarianship within the University community
  • Champions a culture of engagement and belonging, promotes an environment of diversity, equity, and inclusion, demonstrates action and accountability in advancing strategies to support these priorities at all levels of the university.
  • Understands, appreciates, and embraces the Catholic Dominican mission and ethos that distinguishes the University, and supports the Dominican University mission to prepare students to pursue truth, to give compassionate service and to participate in the creation of a more just and humane world
  • Inspires the vision, passion, creativity, innovation, and integrity of library faculty and staff necessary to accomplish university goals and creates a collaborative, supportive, and inclusive work environment
  • Plans, leads, and coordinates an inclusive process to develop collections that support academic programs and promote information literacy across the curriculum
  • Engages creatively and collaboratively to develop partnerships in the curriculum and classroom and to support student success by creating meaningful and engaging activities to improve student informational and digital literacy skills
  • Collaborates with the School of Information Studies, the Butler Children’s Literature Center, the McGreal Center for Dominican Historical Studies, and other schools and departments, to provide integrated and seamless access to the many unique and valuable resources of the University
  • Empowers the Learning Commons and Innovation Lab through planning, collaboration, co-authorship and advocacy, supporting the Learning Common Librarian’s leadership while coordinating with the Division of Student Success and Engagement and with the IT department
  • Prepares and manages the Library's budgets focusing on collections, library staff and faculty development, and the technologies needed to meet the information needs of the University
  • Oversees the day-to-day management of the library faculty and staff, the facilities, and the library resources
  • Commits to staying current with developments in the field of library and information science and library technology
  • Ensures that all library facilities and resources are accessible for all students, faculty, and staff
  • Actively participates in the academic, governance, and cultural life of the University and serves on the Academic Technology and Facilities Committee and on the Deans Team

Qualifications:

All qualifications are required unless otherwise indicated.

  • Knowledge and understanding of both traditional and emerging academic library services and standards
  • Knowledge of emerging technology trends for libraries and archives
  • Ability to build consensus, develop and interpret policies, and encourage a collaborative work environment
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively
  • MLS or equivalent degree from an ALA-accredited program; a second advanced degree, master’s or PhD, is preferred
  • Minimum of five years of progressively responsible supervisory and administrative experience in an academic library
  • Experience with budgets, personnel management, planning, and assessment
  • Experience working with students, faculty, and staff from diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Experience in or deep understanding of shared faculty governance
  • Experience with obtaining external funding including successful grant writing and management
  • Record of professional activities and academic scholarship
  • Speaking and writing fluency in Spanish desirable
