Position Summary

As an integral member of BAMPFA's development team, the Senior Grants Officer is responsible for designing and delivering a strategic multiyear program to secure grant support for BAMPFA's mission, vision, and institutional priorities. This position reports directly to the Director of Development (DOD) and is responsible for achieving annual contributed income goals from foundation, corporate, and government sources. The financial target for this position is to raise $2 million annually.

The Senior Grants Officer actively identifies, cultivates, solicits, and stewards a portfolio of foundation and government prospects that have the capacity to give $50,000 or more, including preeminent local and national foundations. The position may also manage a smaller number of corporate and individual prospects. To fulfill the annual grant fundraising targets, the Senior Grants Officer works in close collaboration with BAMPFA's curatorial, program, finance, and development staff to develop compelling opportunities for philanthropic partnership and impact.

In support of the museum's overall program of grant fundraising, this position provides guidance and training to the museum's Grants Officer and work-study student(s), and serves as the primary liaison with the University's Sponsored Projects Office (SPO) and University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR) for all grant-related work.

Responsibilities
  • Develops compelling top-level funding proposals that link funder priorities with BAMPFA goals. Ensures that proposal materials meet funder criteria, are persuasive, accurate, well targeted, and meet funder deadlines. Ensures that predetermined fundraising goals are met. Raises $2 million annually through solicitations of corporate, foundation, and government prospects. Reviews, drafts, and edits varied fundraising materials (grant proposals, funder credit lines for publication, etc.). Makes a minimum of 8 contacts monthly with prospects to request funding to support exhibitions, special programs, education department activities and general operations.
  • Develops, implements, and recommends short-term and multi-year fundraising plans for foundation, government, and corporate sources. Oversees prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship, to maximize funding for exhibitions, programs, special projects, education department activities, and general operating support. Works with senior staff to assess grant needs and opportunities. Balances institutional needs with funding opportunities and fundraising resources. Creates and monitors annual general and restricted grant plan.
  • Identifies, cultivates, and stewards general and restricted grant funders and other prospects and donors, as assigned. Works closely with program officers and foundation executives to position BAMPFA for successful solicitation strategies. Coordinates general and restricted grant funder and prospect cultivation activities, and participates in cultivation efforts. Works with BAMPFA Director, Chief Curator, DOD, and program staff in the foundation, corporate, and government prospect cultivation efforts, as appropriate. Develops individualized strategies and materials, prepares for successful solicitations by strategizing with key staff, and prepares key staff and volunteers for prospect contact. Works closely with UDAR and SPO on prospect clearance and grant contracts. Ensures that grant obligations and related reporting are met, and works with funders when adjustments are needed. Tracks and reports progress on prospect research, cultivation, and solicitation.
  • Serves as team lead for the grants department, providing guidance and training to the Grants Officer and work-study students. Author and tracker of grants department deadline calendar and other department revenue tracking tools. Team leader for disbursement of grant assignments between self and Grants Officer.
  • Works with DOD and Business Services Director on six-month budget reprojections for foundation, government, and corporate donors and prospects.

Required Qualifications
  • Thorough working knowledge and understanding of fundraising, donor relations and public relations concepts, principles, techniques, procedures and practices.
  • Proven history of writing effective fundraising proposals with a strong record of success, especially in the area of federal government grants.
  • Thorough working knowledge of or the ability to learn quickly BAMPFA, including its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements and infrastructure.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, et cetera.
  • Thorough written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen, to build and maintain effective working relationships at all organizational levels and with outside constituencies.
  • Thorough analytical and critical thinking skills, including skills in creative and effective decision-making and problem identification/avoidance/resolution.
  • Skills to meet or exceed fundraising goals and objectives.
  • Highly developed attention to detail, project management, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Strong Excel and Microsoft Office Suite skills.
  • Ability to multi-task various projects and work on a number of grant proposals simultaneously.

Education
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Salary & Benefits

This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary will be commensurate with experience up to $80,000.00
