The Department of Mathematics at the University of Arizona is seeking candidates for a Systems Administrator I position.
This position works as a member of the Mathematics Department Information Technology Support Team. This jobholder maintains the Linux server system, administers the network and supports information technology in a cross-platform (Windows, Mac, Linux) environment. The primary responsibility for this position is system administration but some Linux workstation end user support will also be required.

Monitors availability, performance and security of computer systems software including operating and network systems and utilities, servers and other hardware and related application systems.
Installs, configures and documents computer systems software, hardware and related applications systems. Adds, removes, and maintains systems software and hardware according to established procedures.
Creates, monitors, modifies and maintains user accounts and implements systems use policies. Responds to basic technical and workstation support requests from users and technical staff. Installs and maintains hardware, software and peripheral equipment for user workstations.
Performs data backup and disaster recovery. Responds to security breaches, service interruptions, and other critical situations.
Participates in the coordination of systems activities and communicates with other internal and external systems staff. Participates in systems planning, design and development and systems hardware and software projects.
Other duties as assigned.
• Some knowledge and experience with building source and/or binary Linux packages and/or Debian and/or Ubuntu systems.
• Some knowledge and experience supporting cross-platform networked file, print and/or email services.
• Some knowledge of very basic Linux scripting skills (e.g. bash, sh, perl).
• Ability to work on a variety of projects at the same time, while making progress on all of them.
• Good documentation skills.
Bachelor’s degree and 1 year of relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Examples of equivalencies would be a High School Diploma plus 5 years of relevant experience OR Vocational/Technical training OR an Associate’s degree plus 3 years of relevant experience
- Experience with VMWare systems.
- Experience with configuring any or all of the following services: DNS, DHCP, LDAP, NFS, Apache, MySQL, SSH.
- Experience with web applications, PHP, HTML, and basic SQL queries.
