Job Summary

Savannah State University is now accepting applications for an Assistant Professor of Music/Director of University Bands tenure track faculty position. The Director of University Bands is expected to provide leadership in recruiting outstanding students to the band, and academic programs, and to maintain active and collaborative relationships with university athletics, advancement, student affairs, academic affairs as well as public schools and band programs throughout the state of Georgia and beyond.


The successful candidate will provide a vision and leadership for all aspects of a traditional HBCU band program repertoire as well as provide quality instruction in the academic degree program. Teaching responsibilities include the direction of Marching Band, Jazz Ensemble, and Symphonic Band as well as teaching applied lessons in one or more instruments, and other courses in the music concentration and core area.

Participate fully as a member of the Music area in activities such as student mentorship/advising, program and department meetings, committee membership, textbook selection, and other duties as expected of a tenure-track faculty by the department and college. Contribute to the development of students, the department, and the community through the involvement in, NAfME, CBDNA, GMEA program Recitals, and other projects as identified by the department and/or department head.

Required Qualifications

Master of Music minimum. Recent band conducting experiences at the college and/or high school levels and previous instructional experience required. Ability to rehearse and conduct Symphonic, Jazz, and Marching Bands. Candidate shall be willing to become a member of the Georgia Music Educators Association and participate in GMEA sanctioned events.

Preferred Qualifications

Terminal degree in Music. Some teaching and direction experience at the college level preferred. Traditional HBCU marching band directing experience. The successful candidate will have experience working with public school band programs, be in demand as an adjudicator and/or clinician, and possess excellent administrative skills.
