The Nursing Skills Laboratory Manager serves as the lead laboratory manager for the nursing skills laboratories, identifies evidence-based best practices, educates faculty members on how best to teach the new practices, and teaches students who require additional skills practice. Determines equipment needs, recommends vendors and purchases for the nursing skills laboratories, develops and maintains inventory and inventory control processes, programs and operates high-fidelity human-patient simulators (iStan and Noelle/Baby Hal), oversees OSHA implementation, establishes laboratory utilization schedule, schedules staff assistants, and oversees maintenance and repair of equipment.

  • Supervises student assistants, tutors, custodial personnel or others assigned to assist in the laboratory to assure routine cleaning of physical space and equipment, and to provide an efficient and consistent organizational flow of the day-to-day operations
  • Continually evaluates current clinical literature in order to extract best-practices to be taught to students
  • Instructs students when practicing clinical skills in the laboratory or when instructors are not present during open lab hours; works with students who bring in remediation prescription for specific lab skills from clinical instructors
  • Teaches faculty about current evidence-based practices and the use of human patient simulators; to include but not limited to, Noelle, Baby Hal, Infant, and iStan portables
  • Participates with faculty to ensure supervision of use of the laboratory, instructs faculty members, and assist faculty with the use of high-fidelity human patient simulators
  • Oversees maintenance and repair of equipment and obtains requests for new supplies and equipment
  • Develops and maintains computer program to constantly update system so multiple groups can use the equipment
  • Develops computerized inventory system, maintains inventory of equipment and supplies, and assures receipt of ordered supplies and equipment
  • Manages a large budget to procure appropriate technical equipment and supplies distribution for teaching evidence-based practices; orders and maintains linen and supplies needed for student use; such as, IV pumps, feeding tube pumps, Heat/cold water circulating devices, High-fidelity and mid-fidelity human patient simulators, including Noelle (birthing mother), Baby Hal, iStan and SimMan, automatic blood pressure and temperature devices, wall-based and freestanding opthalmascopes and otoscopes, low-fidelity mannequins, automatic beds, computerized medication dosing carts, and other equipment and supplies required for Nursing Skills instruction
  • Recommends to Dean, faculty members, and/or Department Chairs operational changes to enhance the effectiveness of the Nursing Skills Lab in serving students and faculty members
  • Interfaces with sales representatives, suppliers of equipment and supplies, and biomedical technicians
  • Schedules tours of laboratory upon request
  • Provides appropriate OSHA postings, brochures, and assures disposal of industrial waste according to College and OSHA standards
  • Performs other duties as assigned

  • Master’s degree in Nursing (MSN) and two (2) years of relevant experience in a healthcare setting or education
  • All degrees must be from a regionally accredited institution
  • Meet SACS qualifications to teach in Nursing Program
  • Ability to keep abreast in the use and training of new instructional technology
  • Full knowledge of use of the simulators and programming the computers for specific scenarios
  • Ability to provide quick think-on-your-feet problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced ever-changing work environment
  • Possess excellent communication skills (written and oral)
  • Possess effective management skills
  • Skill in Microsoft Office software applications, developing spread sheets, and data base systems applicable to discipline
  • Ability to teach faculty and supervise students in performing basic nursing skills
  • Ability to provide detailed reports and efficient organizational skills to maintain laboratory
  • Possess a high comfort level to repair equipment and high-fidelity human patient simulators
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that may include evening and weekend assignments
  • Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships and work well in a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural environment with faculty, students, and staff
