    The ideal candidate will share Fresno City College’s commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse student population. As of the 2019-2020 academic year, we currently enroll over 25,000 students in which 59% identify as Latinx, 12% as Asian/Pacific Islander, 5% as Black/African American, 19% as White, 1% as American Indian/Alaska Native, and 4% as multiracial. Fresno City College is a Hispanic-Serving Institution, reflecting the great responsibility that the College has to the educational attainment and economic well-being of the surrounding community. The successful candidate will join a department dedicated to the use of curriculum responsive to the students it serves.

    Under the direct supervision of the Dean of Instruction, Workforce Development – Career and Technology Center Division, and the general direction of the Fire Technology Director, the instructor will perform the following:

    • Instruction in current fire service methods and technologies to pre-service and in-service fire personnel;
    • Use up-to-date technology, provide instruction in the degree and certificate program and fire academies consistent with fire technology curriculum requirements and standards;
    • Provide assistance in the California State Fire Marshal and the State board of fire services accreditation process;
    • Maintain currency with the international accreditation processes such as Pro board, IFSAC and National Registry standards;
    • Assist in the development of the instructional schedule;
    • Assist in the advising and registration of students;
    • Assist in the development and improvement of curriculum and courses;
    • Create, provide, and support innovative programs and initiatives, while also maintaining regulatory compliance;
    • Assist with general supervision and coordination for fire technology programs;
    • Assist with recruitment, screening, interviewing, and evaluating of a faculty applicants;
    • Conduct evaluations of adjunct faculty;
    • Ensure an excellent on-going level of performance as well as rigorous evaluation and consistent quality of training and standards;
    • Recommend the purchase of supplies and equipment;
    • Ensure proper maintenance solution of apparatus and equipment;
    • Assist in development of annual budget;
    • Understand long-term and strategic planning;
    • Stay current on National Registry and professional fire service standards;
    • Work cooperatively with the Fire Technology advisory committee and fire service related agencies and organizations;
    • Serve on and attending department, college, and district committees as needed;
    • Participate in program review, student learning outcome development and assessment to improve student learning;
    • Teach assignments in a variety of instructional settings and times, including evening and/or weekends, on-line or off-campus and large group instruction classes as needed; and
    • Otherwise fulfilling all of the duties and responsibilities of instructors as required by Administrative Regulation 7122.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom; AND

    • Master’s degree in any discipline taught at the college or in adult learning theory and two years closely related experience;

      OR

    • A valid California Community College Credential;

      OR

    • The equivalent education and/or experience (requires an equivalency).

    Desirable Qualifications:

    • Experience and skill with addressing issues of equity in the classroom;
    • Recent experience working with African American, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes;
    • Willingness to examine and remediate one’s instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students;
    • Experience working with a diverse student population;
    • Five years of full-time paid professional fire related experience with a background in teaching basic firefighter skills IAW National Registry standards;
    • Experience in online and hybrid teaching environment and possess an online teaching certification or equivalent;
    • Possess or qualify to be a California State Fire marshal registered instructor;
    • Possess a valid Class B or Class C with Firefighter endorsement California Driver’s License;
    • Possess a Paramedic license
    • Demonstrate extensive interpersonal communication skills;
    • Knowledge of current assessment methods and materials;
    • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students and staff;
    • Related work and professional experience;
    • Potential for contribution to institutional vitality and growth; and
    • Knowledge of the community college and its mission and goals.

    Conditions of Employment:

    206 duty days per year.

    Salary and Benefits:

    Starting salary is $67,212 – $101,187 based on education and experience. A doctoral stipend of $2,160 is available. Salary and stipend will be prorated for actual duty days worked. In addition, the District offers an attractive fringe benefit package including medical, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and dependents, and life insurance. Employees are also members of the California State Teacher’s Retirement System (CalSTRS).

    Selection Procedure:

    Applications will be screened by Human Resources for completeness and to determine which applicants meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement.

    From the applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and who have submitted all the required documents by the closing date and time listed on the job announcement, a selection committee will review the candidates who are best qualified based on the minimum and desirable qualifications then determine who will be invited to interview.

    The selection committee will rate responses to the interview questions, teaching demonstration, and writing prompt (if applicable). Based on this rating, a small number of applicants will be selected as the “recommended candidates”. These candidates will be forwarded to the Vice President of Instruction and College President for final interviews.

    A hiring recommendation will be made by the College President and forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Center Community College District for final approval.

    Organization

    State Center Community College District (SCCCD) was formed in 1964 when it assumed control of Fresno City College and Reedley College. SCCCD serves approximately one million people and 18 unified and high school districts in more than 5,500 square miles of urban and rural territory, including most of Fresno and Madera counties and portions of Kings and Tulare counties. SCCCD is governed by a seven-member board of trustees who represent seven trustee areas. Total district enrollment for the fall semester 2012 is over 34,000 students. SCCCD is a merit system district with over 2,300 faculty and classified staff represented by the California School Employees Association (CSEA) and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). The total operating budget for SCCCD in 2012-13 is $168 million. 

    Fresno City College, established in 1910, enrolls in excess of 22,000 students and offers more than 100 associate of arts and science degree programs and 60 certificate of achievement programs in vocational/occupational areas. Reedley College, established in 1926, is located in Reedley (approximately 25 miles southeast of Fresno) and enrolls approximately 6,200 students in a variety of courses and degree programs in occupational education and the arts and sciences. SCCCD operates three educational centers with a combined enrollment of approximately 8,300 students. The Willow International, Madera and Oakhurst centers offer programs in general education for transfer and two-year degrees. In addition, the district offers occupational and technical training at its Career and Technology Center and the Training Institute.
