To help support the work of the University, we have an immediate opening for an Assistant Director for Interfaith Cooperation and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Position Reports To:  Assistant Vice-President of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Position Summary:  Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is responsible for leading efforts to build and sustain a diverse and culturally vibrant campus, which promotes student success and retention. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion supports Chatham University’s educational goals and strategic plan by embracing a social justice and intersectional identity approach to its diversity, equity, and inclusion work. This inaugural position bridges student and academic affairs in a strategic and unique position to support equity and inclusion for both students, faculty, and staff.

The Assistant Director for Interfaith Cooperation and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion will oversee Interfaith efforts and campus programming in ODEI; facilitate mentorship opportunities for students through working with the R.I.S.E. program and develops and facilitates opportunities for cross-cultural learning and engagement across campus related to equity and inclusion, which includes but is not limited programming and supporting coordination of faculty/staff training for interfaith efforts.  The Assistant Director will work closely with other units to enhance personal, socio-cultural and professional development and growth.

The Assistant Director will help create and promote an inclusive culture for student success while serving as a role model for students, providing the inspiration, vision, mentoring, and direction needed to assist students in achieving their personal, academic, and professional goals. This role interfaces and collaborates with faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community partners, and must possess the ability to work occasional evening and/or weekends.

This position also develops and sustains campus-wide programs that raise awareness and provide education around social justice, institutional racism, power and privilege, oppression, and cultural and ethnic identity; and facilitates activities and events that are responsive to the needs and concerns of campus, especially the needs of students from diverse backgrounds.

This position is funded for 2-years. Review of applications will begin January 11, 2021 and will continue until the position is filled.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Diversity and Inclusion Council to oversee Multifaith efforts and IFYC engagement.
  • Support Faculty Staff Professional Development for Interfaith Engagement.
  • Create programs and initiatives to improve diverse student recruitment and retention.
  • Serve as the primary coordinator of the RISE mentorship program.
  • Responsible for leading the development of a comprehensive calendar of events addressing multicultural education, including diversity month celebrations (Black History Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, Native American Heritage Month, LGBTQIA History Month, Women of Color HerStory Month, and Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month)

Qualifications: 

  • Master’s Degree in an applicable field (Higher Ed, Education Policy, Organizational Leadership, etc.)
  • An understanding of and demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience working with a diverse student population
  • Ability to understand the needs of students from diverse backgrounds
  • Strong management and organizational skills
  • Ability to collaborate and build relationships with students, faculty, and staff
  • One-two years of experience in campus programming, multicultural affairs, academic support services, and/or counseling services; student affairs experience with an emphasis in diversity and inclusion preferred.

Skills:

  • Cultural competency that encompasses multicultural awareness, knowledge and skills.
  • Familiarity discussing race, ethnicity, structures of power, and other dimensions of diversity from an equity lens.
  • Commitment to and effectiveness in working with historically underrepresented students and their communities.
  • Excellent administrative skills, including written, oral, and editing.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Ability to exercise tact and overall independent judgment in dealing with student, parent, faculty, and staff concerns.
  • Ability to handle highly confidential information and maintain confidential files.
  • Demonstrated skills in management, development, implementation, problem solving and evaluations of policies and operations.
  • Ability to present information in a clear and concise manner to groups (e.g. students, parents)
  • Flexibility and willingness to function as a member of a team essential.
  • Proven qualities of integrity, and dependability.
  • Knowledge of student development theories and philosophies.
  • Possess a collaborative approach to working with both Student Affairs and other professionals.
  • Flexibility to evolve with changing University policies and goals.

Ability to:

  • Interpret and apply program rules and regulations
  • Work independently with minimal day-to-day supervision, with ability to set priorities and dead-lines, and to juggle multiple tasks while ensuring projects are completed with excellent attention to detail.
  • Maintain timely and efficient communication in a professional manner
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with FERPA ethics
  • Work effectively with students, possess a commitment to social justice and equity, and knowledge, training and experience of best practices to support diversity within institutions of higher education.
  • Build effective and collaborative working relationships within and across diverse population, including students, colleagues and the general public, as well as the ability to manage, oversee and support student staff.
