Departmental Overview

University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR) strengthens Berkeley's excellence through engagement with alumni, parents, undergraduate and graduate students, and friends of the University, raising public awareness about Berkeley and increasing private philanthropy. UDAR provides overall direction for the campus' philanthropic advancement strategies and works to strengthen unit development in partnership with campus fundraisers. The Division handles a range of central activities and services encompassing communications, stewardship, prospect development, gift management, and more. Within this umbrella, the newly created Office of Alumni Relations works to inspire the lifetime engagement of Berkeley graduates through a coordinated approach that advances alumni towards increased involvement and greater giving.

The Associate Director, Alumni Engagement Programs develops and implements alumni initiatives for the benefit of graduates and the University. The Associate Director establishes and maintains high-level relationships between UC Berkeley and alumni constituents by designing and administering programs that serve diversity, equity, and inclusion, regions, and volunteering opportunities. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Associate Director provides leadership of two critical program areas in the alumni engagement strategic plan: (1) alumni diversity & inclusion and (2) alumni programs, including volunteering. The Associate Director works in active collaboration with the Division of Equity & Inclusion, the Division of Student Affairs, and executive academic and administrative leaders across the Berkeley enterprise, including all schools, colleges, departments, units, Cal Athletics, University Library and the independent Cal Alumni Association.

Responsibilities

Design, develop, and implement short and longrange plans that increase alumni engagement through diversity, regional, and programming initiatives.
  • Partner with and serve as the primary alumni relations lead for the Divisions of Equity & Inclusion (E&I) and Student Affairs.
  • Work with the 14 schools and colleges, campus units, CAA, University Library, Major Gifts, Annual Giving and Cal Athletics to determine priorities and develop a high-level strategy for core alumni markets throughout the US.
  • Create inclusive, welcoming, and culturally relevant alumni programs that expand pathways for access and success for diverse alumni groups.
  • Engage the local, regional, and domestic Berkeley alumni base through meaningful programming that enhances lifelong connections with graduates.

Identify marketing and communication needs and develop strategies to inform alumni of engagement opportunities around diversity, regional location, and volunteer activities.
  • Connect alumni to student groups; partner with the Divisions of E&I and Student Affairs to create pathways for student-alumni engagement.
  • Together with UDAR's Major Gifts and Student Experience and Diversity teams, develop a coordinated strategy for diverse and inclusive engagement representative of Cal's alumni population.
  • Develop regional alumni engagement programs, marketing & communications strategies, volunteering opportunities, and events for alumni communities and regional areas with the highest concentrations of graduates.

Partner with the Alumni Engagement Coordinator and the Associate Director, Alumni Engagement to plan, execute, and evaluate the overall effectiveness of programs designed to engage alumni according to diversity, region, or volunteer interest; establish and ensure on-going improvements in alumni engagement metrics in each of these program areas.
  • Support the events and activities of recognized diverse UC Berkeley alumni groups and affiliates; convene formal and informal conversations with the leadership of these groups.
  • Create alumni and volunteer networking events, both on campus and in professional settings, for the benefit of alumni and in support of campus priorities.

Mentor other staff members, including two fulltime Assistant Directors and a full-time Coordinator.
  • Stand-in for the Executive Director in meetings with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Serve as a strategic partner to team members in the execution of complex work in a fast-paced, start-up environment.

Required Qualifications
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of general issues in higher education and the ability to quickly learn and understand campus-specific issues.
  • Advanced knowledge of alumni, including their composition and areas of concern, especially among diverse alumni communities.
  • Advanced knowledge of practices and procedures associated with building and maintaining effective working relationships with all levels of alumni, internal and external constituencies.
  • Advanced written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including skill to produce information that is appropriately presented and effectively received by target constituencies.
  • Active listening skills, including advanced critical thinking and analytical skills.
  • Advanced skill to quickly identify and develop strategies to effectively communicate the institution's message.
  • Advanced level analytical and decision-making skills, sound judgment, and highly developed political acumen.
  • Advanced skill to recognize potential areas of alumni concern and skill to effectively address, resolve and/or mitigate problems or issues.
  • Advanced project management skills, including skills to plan and implement successful events.

Education/Training:
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience in a leadership role of growing office of professional and executive staff.
  • Prior experience working in college and university alumni relations/advancement.

Salary & Benefits

This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience.
