Postdoctoral Fellow – Systemic Autoimmunity

Postdoctoral Position in Autoimmune Skin Disease

The Dermatology Department at UMass Medical School invites applications for a full-time Postdoctoral position in the area of autoimmune skin diseases working directly with newly appointed Chair, Dr. John Harris. Dr. Harris is an ideal mentor as he is not only an expert in autoimmune skin disease, but he has also identified new treatment options for patients through his translational research program and is currently establishing clinical trials. Qualified candidates should have experience working with both mouse models of autoimmune skin disease as well as human cells/tissues. Basic experience or understanding of informatics/computational biology is preferred.  Review of applications will begin immediately. 

Responsibilities

Generate hypotheses, design and execute experiments, as well as interpret results to explore the following topics: Validation and hypothesis-testing of pathways detected in affected skin of patients identified using existing -omics data, including data generated using single cell RNAseq, proteomics, metabolomics, and other platforms; work closely with computational biologists to identify and prioritize pathways for this work; design projects with a focus on developing potential treatments to treat disease.

Expectations also include preparation of oral presentations for program/department research in progress meetings, submission of abstracts for poster and oral presentations at national/international meetings, and oversight of technician and/or student working on related projects.

Requirements:

Highly motivated with a PhD in Immunology, Informatics, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, or related discipline.

Working knowledge of cellular immunology, T cell activity, cytokine biology, and innate immune pathways.

Hands-on laboratory experience in relevant methodologies, trouble-shooting technical problems, and data analysis skills.

Experience in computational biology is preferred. 

Experience in the following techniques preferred:  handling/injecting/genotyping mice, preparation of lymphoid and dermal/epidermal tissues for histology, isolation and cell culture of lymphocyte populations, multicolor flow cytometry, DNA/RNA purification and quantification, qPCR, enzyme-based immunoassays, and immunofluorescent/confocal microscopy, database comparisons.

Outstanding organizational and time management skills, as well as the ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
