Director of the Master of Arts in Teaching Program in the Division of Teacher Education

POSITION: Full-time, with faculty rank; continuing status (tenure) track; 11-month faculty appointment in the School of Education.

START DATE:  July 1, 2021

BACKGROUND

Fresno Pacific’s University’s (FPU) growing teacher preparation program is housed in the School of Education FPU offers the multiple and single subject teaching credentials which are accredited by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. Graduates of FPU’s teaching programs are highly respected throughout the San Joaquin Valley and beyond. FPU’s Master of Arts (MAT) program includes the credential coursework and 4 additional courses which students complete in two semesters during their first years of teaching.

Throughout the arc of the MAT, students are encouraged to develop habits of inquiry and reflection on the persistent problems of practice that they face as beginning and new teachers. These problems form the basis of their classroom research projects. They develop an understanding of qualitative research methodology and the research skills which they will apply by completing an action research project. The program utilizes features such as the cohort model and blended instructional delivery systems to foster a robust, and supportive professional community of new teachers.

ROLE

The Director of the MAT program provides overall leadership and management of all aspects of the post-credential MAT coursework. The Director teaches courses in the credential sequence as well as in the MAT sequence of four courses:

EDUC 701: Issues in Teaching: Investigations of Problems of Practice

EDUC 703: Curriculum Study: Theory, Analysis and Practice

EDUC 704: Research Methodology: Qualitative Action Research

EDUC 705: MAT Research Project

Specifically, the Director is responsible for the following duties:

  • Work collaboratively with the Chair of the Division of Teacher Education and other faculty within the division to lead the MAT program.
  • Collaborate with faculty who teach in the Division of Teacher Education.
  • Recruit, support and train adjunct faculty to teach in the MAT coursework.
  • Admit and advise MAT students.
  • Mentor MAT students throughout their culminating action research projects.
  • Teach in the MAT and credentialprograms. Teaching assignment is dependent on candidate’s experience, research interests and program needs.
  • Pursue an active scholarly agenda.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Earned terminal degree (or completion of degree by July 1, 2021) in education or related field.
  • Evidence of successful experience teaching college or post-BA students.
  • Evidence of successful experience teaching in K12 schools.
  • Record or promise of scholarly achievement.
  • Knowledge of and experience with qualitative research methodology.
  • Ability to work with students, staff, and faculty in a collegial environment.
  • Ability to multi-task, solve problems and resolve conflicts.
  • Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience and skill with addressing issues of educational equity.
  • Commitment to the Christian faith and the University’s mission of Christ-centered teaching and learning and involvement in a local church.
