The Department of Health and Society at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) invites applications for a full-time teaching stream position in the area of Health Sciences. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream with an expected start date of July 1, 2021, or shortly thereafter.
The University of Toronto Scarborough, campus home to the Department of Health and Society, is implementing a new Strategic Plan: Inspiring Inclusive Excellence. Consistent with the values and objectives in that plan, we especially welcome candidates who self-identify as Indigenous or those who have lived experience in Black or other racialized (persons of colour) communities. This position is part of a cohort of similar faculty searches in Biological Sciences, Historical and Cultural Studies, the Centre for Critical Development Studies, Political Science, and Psychology. New colleagues will have the opportunity to be connected with previous cohorts of faculty from under-represented groups, including those hired last year in four departments spanning the Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities.
By the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, applicants must have earned a PhD degree in biological sciences; pharmacy; medical, nutrition, or rehabilitation sciences; or a related area. The successful candidate must have a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching and a breadth of experience teaching in the Health Sciences. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and broaden our existing departmental strengths. Priority will be given to candidates who have a demonstrated commitment to recognizing and addressing gaps in students’ access to Post-Secondary Education.
Candidates must have expertise teaching health sciences in a degree-granting program, including lecture preparation and delivery, curriculum development, TA management and mentorship, and development of online instructional material. Additionally, candidates must possess a demonstrated commitment to curricular and pedagogical innovation, excellent pedagogical practices, and a demonstrated interest in teaching-related scholarly activities. Candidates must also demonstrate an ability to work within an interdisciplinary department that values collaboration across discipline, rank, and method. Experience teaching undergraduate statistics is an asset.
Candidates must provide evidence of excellence in teaching and pedagogical inquiry and the capacity to teach a wide range of courses in the health sciences, which can be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, awards and accolades, and a teaching portfolio submitted as part of the application, which includes a statement of teaching philosophy linked to excellent pedagogical practice; descriptions of teaching strategies; sample course syllabi; course materials; teaching evaluations; and documentation indicating innovation in teaching related activities, which can include leading workshops or seminars, as well as strong letters of reference from referees of high standing.
The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching beginner and advanced undergraduate courses in the health sciences; fulfilling administrative activities related to teaching and student success; participating in and eventually leading curriculum development; and contributing to program and departmental initiatives, particularly those that recognize and address gaps in student access to Post-Secondary Education. Candidates must show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment demonstrated through the application materials.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
