The University of Colorado, Department of Medicine, Division of Biomedical Informatics and Personalized Medicine (BIPM) has an opening for a Sr Professional Research Assistant as a Bioinformaticist in the laboratory of Christopher R. Gignoux, PhD at the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, Colorado and the Center for Personalized Medicine. The Center is interested in the importance of genetic ancestry in modern health systems. To that end, this bioinformaticist will develop robust methods to integrate genetic ancestry inference into the Biobank at the Colorado Center for Personalized Medicine (CCPM) and other datasets at CCPM. These include a robust implementation of global and local ancestry estimation, identity by descent estimation, and parsing and preparing genotype and sequencing data necessary for downstream analyses. This position will also work on a wide range of computational tasks to support integration of ancestry and population genetics within the research programs of the medical campus. Supervision ReceivedWork is performed under the general direction, guidance, and supervision of Jonathan Shortt, PhD., and Chris Gignoux, PhD.

 

Examples of Work Performed
  • Help in design of new research studies, data cleaning and association testing, maintenance of current pipelines, development of new pipelines, and preparation of abstracts.
  • Engage in population-scale genomic data analysis using bash scripting and parallel programming in a High Performance Computing (HPC)/cluster Unix/Linux environment.
  • Analyze and generate ancestry information inferred from high throughput genomic data.
  • Apply SQL, and advanced Perl and Python programming to support and extend Bioinformatics workflows in Linux/Unix environments.

Salary and Benefits:Salary range is $49,000 - $100,000 and is commensurate with skills and experience.  

 

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $49,000 to $100,000.

 

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

 

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Qualifications
Minimum Requirements

  • Master’s degree in bioinformatics, genetics, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience

  • Experience in the following fields areas: coding (particularly with R or Python), Unix environments, cloud-computing, relational databases/SQL

  • 2 years of experience using scientific principles and concepts of Next Generation Sequencing (Illumina) analysis

The final candidate must meet all listed minimum qualifications at time of hire.

Preferred Requirements

  • Doctorate degree in bioinformatics, genetics, or related field

  • ≥ 2 years of experience in population genetics and evolutionary biology

  • Pipeline development and standard tools for large-scale genomic data inference (e.g., PLINK, Structure, Admixture, PCA)

  • Using bash scripting in a Unix/Linux environment

  • Experience with queue management software in high performance computing environments

  • Advanced Perl and/or Python Programming
