The Department of Economics and Finance in the Robert C. Vackar College of Business and Entrepreneurship at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley ((UTRGV) http://www.utrgv.edu/cobe)) invites applications for the position of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor of Practice. We are a Hispanic-serving institution located in South Texas near the Mexico border near the famous and beautiful South Padre Island beaches. We seek dedicated and excellent teachers who focus on improving student success, preparing exceptional professionals in Economics, as well as continuing the tradition of improving the social mobility of our students.
Our courses are offered during the day and evenings in different modalities - face-to-face, hybrid, online synchronous and online asynchronous.
In addition to offering undergraduate degrees in Economics (BA in Economics and BBA in Economics) and Finance (BBA in Finance), faculty in the Department have very active research agendas in their fields of expertise. In addition to Economics and Finance courses at the MBA level, the Department contributes to teaching in the financial planning concentration in the MBA program. The College also offers a Ph.D. program in Business Administration with concentrations in Finance, Information Systems, Management, and Marketing.


Minimum Qualifications:
• Masters degree in Economics or a closely related field, from an accredited institution, and a minimum of ten years of leadership level experience in the field. (Applied Professor of Practice)
• We also invite applications from individuals with a Ph.D. in Economics, and prior teaching experience who wish to stay active in research. These candidates would be considered for the position of Academic Professor of Practice. Individuals with a Ph.D. degree who have previously earned the rank of assistant, associate or full professor at comparable institutions may be considered for similar ranks as professors of practice.


Discipline Specific Required Qualifications:


Preferred Qualification:
• Significant teaching experience in higher education in the field of Economics
• Experience of community engagement, such as participation in a professional society and/or serving as a speaker for local or regional events
• Experience of teaching Economics in higher education in a culturally diverse setting
• Willingness to contribute to program development, and to mentor our culturally diverse and often economically disadvantaged students as they prepare for careers after graduation

Additional Information:
UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may
require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is
performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive
and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code
§51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of
Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least
135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement
Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week
and at least 135 days in length.

Texas law requires faculty members whose primary language is not English to
demonstrate proficiency in English as determined by a satisfactory paper-based
test score of 500 (computer-based of 173 or internet-based of 61) on the Test of
English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or a satisfactory test score of 6.0 on the

A New University with a Long History

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 in a historic move that brings together the resources and assets of UT Brownsville and UT Pan American and, for the first time, makes it possible for residents of the Rio Grande Valley to benefit from the Permanent University Fund—a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and the Texas A&M University System.

 

Our new university will also be home to a School of Medicine and will transform Texas and the nation by becoming a leader in student success, teaching, research, and health care. UTRGV will enroll its first class in the fall of 2015, and the School of Medicine will open in 2016.

 

UT Brownsville and UT Pan American

The shared history of The University of Texas Pan American and The University of Texas at Brownsville goes back to 1927, when Edinburg College was founded. In 1973, Pan American opened a second campus in Brownsville, which later became an independent institution of The University of Texas System in 1991. Over the years, the missions and the identities of these great institutions have continually evolved to serve the communities of the Rio Grande Valley.

Now, the evolution and connection between these two institutions is coming full circle as UT Brownsville and UT Pan American are being established as a single, new university and medical school, with a single, new identity—The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
