Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry (https://chem.uncg.edu/) features an extremely supportive and collegial environment with 15 full-time faculty and a diverse student body. We offer a BS in Biochemistry, a BA, BS, and MS in Chemistry including biochemistry options, and a PhD in Medicinal Biochemistry. Our department is housed in a 170,000 square foot, $35 million state of the art science building. Excellent core instrumentation and state of the art facilities for NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry with full-time support staff are available on site.

Position Summary:

This is an opening for a Post Doctoral Fellow position in the Chekan Lab (https://chem.uncg.edu/chekan). Our research is focused on the biosynthesis and engineering of RiPP natural products.

Minimum Qualifications:

Ph.D. or will earn a Ph.D. (before hire date) in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Natural Products Chemistry, or related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have earned a Ph.D. in biochemistry, chemistry, and/or natural products chemistry. They will also have expertise in molecular biology, enzyme assay development, genomics/transcriptomics, and/or small molecule isolation and characterization. De-novo structure elucidation, mass spectrometry, and bacterial fermentation of natural products are particularly desirable skills. A desire to participate in team-oriented research, contribute to student training, and effectively communicate research findings are all essential.

Conduct original research in the area of natural product discovery and biosynthesis. Design and carry out experiments including protein expression, enzyme activity assays, bioinformatics, and small molecule isolation.

Prepare and present updates on ongoing research, provide written reports on research progress, participate in group meetings and present seminars to scientific community when asked. Contribute to the preparation and submission of reports, proposals, and publications related to research.
