CHEMISTRY AND STEM TEACHING FELLOW, Boston University Academy

Tracking Code3372 Job Description

Boston University Academy is seeking a full-time Chemistry & STEM Teaching Fellow to begin in August 2021 for the 2021-2022 academic year. Teaching fellowships are generally one or two-year positions and offer relatively new teachers opportunities for experience, mentorship, and professional growth. Teaching fellows teach a reduced courseload. Primary responsibilities for this position include co-teaching honors-level tenth-grade chemistry, advising STEM-focused senior thesis projects, teaching a section of our STEM seminar course (visiting labs in the local area with students), advising the robotics team, serving in the math and science help center, and contributing to other aspects of independent school life: leading clubs and activities, chaperoning trips, and possibly coaching. The fellowship also features opportunities to observe other teachers, be observed, and discuss teaching practice. The teacher will join a science department committed to inquiry, lab-based learning, and research.

The ideal candidate will have some experience working with adolescents, a degree in a related field, and a student-centered approach. For all positions, we look for candidates who enjoy working with colleagues in a collaborative environment, who are flexible and creative, who will fully engage in the life of the school, and who are committed to fostering an inclusive and equitable community.

As the only high school in New England that is part of a major research university, Boston University Academy (BUA) offers students who love learning both a traditional, caring independent school experience and access to a broad range of university courses. In the eleventh and twelfth grades, students follow their passions by regularly completing up to twelve courses from Boston University’s undergraduate curriculum. The school’s 202 students are curious, capable, and kind. They come from 55 cities and towns in the Greater Boston area. 57% of students identify as students of color. 31% of students are on financial aid — a reflection of BUA’s commitment to equity and access.

To apply, please upload a resume, list of references (if available), and cover letter addressed to Dr. Rosemary White, Assistant Head of School for Academics and Student Affairs. Please send any questions to buacareers@bu.edu.

Required Skills

Bachelor's degree required, Master's or PhD candidacy preferred. One to three years work experience.

Boston University’s generous benefits package including health, dental, life insurance, and paid time off. The Difference Is Our DNA

What compelled the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to award Boston University a grant to fight newborn mortality in Zambia? Why did Martin Luther King, Jr. adopt BU as a place where he could hone his message of justice and equality? And what is the catalyst that prompts 32,557 students from 135 countries to call BU their home every semester? It’s in our DNA: an inherent desire in each of our students, faculty, and staff to vigorously and dauntlessly pursue knowledge—and embrace the unlimited possibilities that come with it.

A Community Unlike Any Other

As you can see below, it takes people, ideas, and a little luck (Boston, you’re our town) to make BU what it is today: one of the most dynamic universities in the world.

Celebrated thinkers: On any given day, students will find themselves mesmerized by Nobel Prize winners, a poet laureate, and the first biomedical engineer ever to receive a MacArthur Foundation “Genius Award,” among others.

Extraordinary teaching: When a classroom starts to percolate with new ideas, it’s because our faculty of scholars and accomplished practitioners know how to ignite students’ imaginations. That’s why we reward our best teachers with BU’s most prestigious honor: The Metcalf Cup and Prize.

Groundbreaking research: With faculty dedicated to a creative, interdisciplinary approach to problem solving, BU has become a leading global research institution—propelled forward by over $350 million a year in sponsored program revenue.

World-class students: Elite students from all 50 states and 135 countries pursue higher education on BU campuses in Boston and at programs in L.A., D.C., and more than 30 other cities on six continents.

A city within a city: Today, 80% of our undergrads live on campus, which could explain the 525 student activity groups alone.

The greatest college town in the world: Boston. ’Nuff said.
