Job SummaryThe Barbara Davis Center (BDC) for Diabetes is a multi-disciplinary diabetes center affiliated with the University of Colorado, School of Medicine. The patient population spans the ages 1 to 70 years with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes. The BDC also serves as a clinical center for TrialNet, an international, multi-center research organization with the goal of understanding the pathophysiology of type 1 diabetes as well as finding ways to prevent type 1 diabetes. Additionally we have many treatment and prevention industry sponsored clinical trials. 

This position is full-time (40 hours per week) as a Professional Research Assistant at the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes, coordinating all aspects for the screening phase of an NIH funded multi-site clinical trial (TrialNet) as well as managing an ongoing longitudinal study of twins affected by type 1 diabetes (Twin Family Study). This position will also involve assisting other coordinators with other clinical trials related to type 1 diabetes.

Supervision Received

This position reports the Research Manager (Hali Broncucia), and Principal Investigators (Andrea Steck, MD and Peter Gottlieb, MD).

Supervision ExercisedSupervision of student workers as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities

This is a position requiring an enthusiasm for medical research and knowledge or interest in diabetes.  The candidate will be self-directed, detail-oriented, and adaptable in a high-intensity research environment involving multiple NIH and industry sponsored research studies. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are a necessity. Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Identify, recruit and enroll participants into the screening phase of the TrialNet Pathway to Prevention Study
  • Enroll and follow participants in the TrialNet Pathway to Prevention Monitoring Study
  • Maintain contact with participants through email, text and phone contact.
  • Maintain research compliance and participant safety during participation
  • Conduct study visits including participant interviews, phlebotomy and data collection for both adult and pediatric participants
  • Organize, maintain and prepare research materials for participant visits
  • Occasional sample processing and shipping
  • Data entry, organization and management of research files
  • Facilitate study related travel and visits
  • Participate in study meetings and trainings as required
  • Recruitment and scheduling for clinical trials
  • Attend events to recruit and screen participants
  • Other duties as assigned
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • This position requires good interpersonal and communication skills, demonstrated ability to work under pressure, the ability to multitask, and the willingness to learn and comply with relevant laws, rules regulations and policies regarding clinical research.
  • Outgoing attitude, comfortability approaching families, ability to quickly establish a good rapport with both children and adults.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
    Working Conditions

    This position works typically Monday-Friday eight-hours/day. Occasional weekends to accommodate patients schedule and experiments may be needed. The position will be located at the Barbara Davis on the University of Colorado Denver, Anschutz medical campus in Aurora, CO.

    Salary and Benefits:

    The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $36,000 to $45,000.

    The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

    The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

    Qualifications
    Minimum Qualifications
    • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in the life sciences or a research discipline
    • Prior work experience in human research and/or clinical setting preferred
     

    Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Phlebotomy experience highly desirable
    • Knowledge and understanding of HIPAA and Regulatory requirements for health care research 
    • Experience working with physicians and nurses is desirable
