The University of Virginia Library seeks a dynamic, collegial, and highly skilled professional to serve as a Science or a Social Science Research Librarian. A Science Research Librarian will serve as the librarian and liaison to Chemistry, Biology, and related departments; a Social Science Research Librarian will serve as the librarian and liaison to Economics and the School of Commerce. As a member of the Research Data Services and Social, Natural and Engineering Science (RDS+SNE) team, the successful candidate will be responsible for outreach, research support, and library instruction for assigned departments. Collaborating with a cohort of science, engineering, social science and data librarians, the individual in this role will advance and promote existing services to enhance research and teaching, contribute to the broader work of open science, scholarship, and education, and will develop and strengthen relationships among the library, faculty and students.

Responsibilities Include

  • Outreach and Engagement: Communicate and engage with researchers, instructors, students and staff in assigned subject areas; cultivate strong partnerships and seek opportunities for enhanced collaboration; propose and promote library services that engage new methods of research and scholarship, especially around open publishing and sustainable scholarship ; and contribute to Library-wide and departmental-wide efforts.
  • Research and Scholarship: Provide research support for and consultations with scholars within assigned subject areas, responding to information requests; collaborate with library colleagues to support interdisciplinary research and scholarly communication.
  • Teaching and Learning: Provide instruction and materials; contribute to and promote emerging efforts around open educational resources; engage and collaborate with instructors and other Librarians to integrate information, digital, and data literacy skills into the curriculum.
  • Collections and Content: Assess collections needs in assigned areas; work with the Collections Management team and other research librarians to establish priorities, support interdisciplinary research, evaluate existing resources and promote new acquisitions.

Qualifications

Required

  • A Master’s degree in library or information science or an advanced degree in a relevant science or social science discipline
  • A bachelor’s degree with at least 4 years of relevant work experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Commitment to fostering an equitable and inclusive workplace, and an ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student population.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as well as independently.

Preferred

  • Experience in scholarly research in a relevant science or social science field sufficient to demonstrate mastery of methods and practices.
  • Teaching experience or experience translating disciplinary research methods to a variety of audiences.
  • Understanding of open educational resources and development, open access publishing and sustainable scholarship, and open science practices.
  • Knowledge of discipline-oriented data sources and data curation practices.
  • Experience in an academic/research library and familiarity with the operations of a research university.

Salary will be commensurate with years of experience and qualifications
