The ECDOI is well known for cutting-edge collaborative research in several fields related to disorders of metabolism, including bariatric surgery, muscle insulin signaling/glucose transport, bioenergetics/exercise physiology, and pediatric healthy weight programs. The mission of the East Carolina Diabetes and Obesity Institute is to develop, promote, facilitate, and support interdisciplinary basic and clinical research in disorders of metabolism including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and cancer.

The postdoctoral scholar is responsible for independent and collaborative development, implementation, and analysis of scientific research in the discipline of lipid metabolism and mitochondrial function in relation to biology, physiology, and behavior. Responsibilities include management of all aspects of lipid biology, lipid metabolic regulation, and mitochondrial metabolism in the brain and/or skeletal muscle, and how its disruption impacts health, function, and disease. Duties include: hypothesis development, literature review, report writing, supervising of undergraduate research students and graduate research students, overseeing data collection procedures, supervising experimental procedures, review of data for quality control, supervision of data entry/data analysis, analysis of research hypothesis using descriptive and multivariate statistics, and the development of independent and collaborative presentations and publications.

Specific duties will include management of mouse colonies for the project, performing behavioral/exercise regimens, metabolic, biochemical, molecular, and histological-based experiments. Individuals with experience working with mouse models, strong molecular biology skills, and/or mitochondrial metabolism will be prioritized. Scholars are expected to demonstrate compliance with established guidelines and regulatory standards for research including biosafety, responsible conduct of research and human subjects training. Approximately 90% of the postdoctoral scholar’s time will be devoted to duties directly related to the postdoc’s project and/or collaborative projects.

Approximately 10% of the postdoctoral scholar’s time will be devoted to managing the day-to-day activity of undergraduate and graduate research students in the laboratory.

Persons with experience in research using mouse-models, basic lab skills including pipetting, molecular biology (genotyping, RT-PCR, and/or cloning/vector work), protein biology (such as western blotting, immunoprecipitation), project management, and scientific writing. Mitochondrial metabolic phenotyping skills also highly valued but not required.
