FACULTY in Music: Director of Bands and Coordinator of Instrumental Music

POSITION: Full-time, with faculty rank; continuing status track; 9-month faculty appointment, in the School of Humanities, Religion, and Social Sciences.

STARTING DATE:  July 1, 2021

BACKGROUND

The Music Department offers a well-rounded curriculum for students in performance, composition, music education, and church music. Excellence in instrumental and choral music has been a tradition at Fresno Pacific University since its inception in 1944. The Visual and Performing Arts remain at the heart of the university today.

ROLE

The successful candidate will lead the Fresno Pacific University undergraduate instrumental music program, consisting of both music majors and non-majors.  Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Direct the FPU Symphonic Band.
  • Conduct additional ensemble(s) according to candidate’s qualifications and interests; possible ensembles include Jazz Band, Brass Choir, Saxophone Quartet, Woodwind Ensemble,and Pep Band.
  • Teach courses in areas of specialization (private lessons, undergraduate and graduate conducting, instrumental techniques, music education).
  • Oversee instrumental adjunct private lesson instructors.
  • Mentor and advise music majors (as well as general education students).
  • Recruit students for all collegiate instrumental ensembles.
  • Nurture relationships with high school directors and churches in the area.
  • Participate in departmental and university activities.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Terminal degree in an appropriate field. In some circumstances, candidates with teaching experience and a master’s degree may be considered with the expectation of continuing doctoral work as appropriate to the discipline.
  • Record or promise of scholarly and/or professional achievement.
  • Experience in college-level teaching with demonstrated excellence in the areas of instrumental ensemble direction and instrumental instruction.
  • Ability to work with students, staff, and faculty in a collegial environment.
  • Ability to teach and work with persons from culturally diverse backgrounds and experiences.
  • Successful recruitment and retention of students in instrumental programs.
  • Commitment to the Christian faith and the University’s mission of Christ-centered teaching and learning and involvement in a local Fresno area church.

Preferred:

  • A background in Music Education is preferred; other areas of specialization will be considered.
  • Technological expertise in audio/visual production, online curriculum design and development, and distance learning as related to instrumental / ensemble instruction.
  • Willingness to teach in secondary area of expertise, general education music courses, etc.
  • Experience with academic administrative leadership.
  • Membership in a Mennonite Brethren or Anabaptist congregation, or affiliation with a historic peace church.

COMPENSATION: Dependent on qualifications and experience, and paid out over 12 months. Full-time benefits include insurance (medical, vision, dental, LTD), retirement (TIAA).
