Job Description
Postdoctoral Fellow- Department of Surgery & Pharmacology

A Postdoctoral Fellow position is available in Dr. Nariman Balenga's Laboratory, Department of Surgery/Pharmacology, University of Maryland Baltimore. We are seeking a talented inventive result-driven scientist to conduct in vitro pharmacological and biochemical assays. This NIH-funded project focuses on novel mechanisms by which the signaling and trafficking of adhesion G protein-coupled receptors (aGPCRs) are regulated. Daily lab work includes running experiments in 96- or 384-well plate formats with several concentrations of agonists/antagonists/inhibitors followed by endpoint or kinetic readouts. Conventional cell lines (e.g. HEK293) and tissue-derived primary cells will be used to unravel receptor motifs that orchestrate signaling and function. A successful postdoc will develop new assays and must be eager to optimize our current assays. Therefore, being meticulous, troubleshooter, and attentive to minor details is a must.

Dr. Balenga is committed to assist the postdoc in her/his career development. We are a team of scientists with diverse backgrounds and welcome candidates from all races, ethnicities, cultures, genders, and gender identities.

Organization

Welcome to the Baltimore campus of the University of Maryland, founded in 1807 along a ridge in what was then called Baltimore Town. Today, this 61-acre research and technology complex encompasses 65 buildings in West Baltimore near the Inner Harbor.

The University is Maryland's only public academic health, human services, and law center. Seven professional and graduate schools train the majority of the state's physicians, nurses, dentists, lawyers, social workers, and pharmacists.

Under the leadership of President Jay A. Perman, MD, the University is a leading partner in the redevelopment of the west side of Baltimore. The University of Maryland BioPark, which opened in October 2005, promotes collaborative research opportunities and bioscience innovation.

Sponsored research totaled $567.1 million in Fiscal Year 2010. With 6,349 students and 6,717 faculty members and staff, the University is an economic engine that returns more than $15 in economic activity for every $1 of state general funds appropriation. The University community gives more than 2 million hours a year in service to the public.
