Position Summary:

The University of Georgia (UGA) invites applications and nominations for the position of Associate Dean of the Graduate School. The Associate Dean is Chief of Operations in the Graduate School and reports directly to the Vice Provost for Graduate Education and Dean of the Graduate School.

The Vice Provost/Dean directs a staff of more than 30 dedicated individuals. The Associate Dean of the Graduate School is second in command and works closely with the Dean on implementing the Graduate School’s strategic plan and advancing inclusive excellence in graduate education at the University of Georgia. The Graduate School’s mission statement is:

Prioritizing graduate education is critical to supporting and advancing the research, teaching and outreach missions of Georgia’s flagship University. We seek to foster excellence in a broad, inclusive, and growing graduate enterprise that prepares intellectual leaders of the State, Nation, and World.

At present, the major priorities of the Graduate School include growing and diversifying graduate student enrollment while advancing equity and justice in graduate education. Additionally, we are seeking to facilitate the development of excellent and world-renowned graduate programs that attract top graduate student talent, train students for diverse careers of their choice and advance the research, teaching and outreach mission of the University.

Responsibilities
The Associate Dean oversees day-to-day operations and assists the Vice Provost/ Dean in developing and implementing strategic initiatives in the Graduate School. The position includes direct supervision of an administrative assistant and the Directors of Recruitment and Diversity Initiatives, Experiential Professional Development and IT Services. In addition, the Associate Dean works with the Graduate School Business Office to oversee employment actions for staff working in these areas.

Other duties include:
• Provide oversight of membership and committee assignments for the Graduate Council and management of the Appeals and Program Committees. Through work with these committees, the Associate Dean manages the review and approval of program proposals and student appeals of dismissal, admission decisions, and grades.
• Contribute to the Graduate School’s outreach to other units on campus (e.g. Curriculum Systems, Financial Aid, Institutional Research, Online Learning, Faculty Affairs Legal Affairs, Equal Opportunity Office, among others) and represent the Graduate School on a variety of institutional committees.
• Serve as the first point of contact for Graduate Coordinators seeking guidance/exemptions on policy and procedure, Graduate Program Faculty interested in program development, and Graduate Students needing guidance on requirements, exceptions, and other matters.
• Serve as the compliance and student complaint officer for the Graduate School.
• Oversee the Graduate School in the Vice Provost/Dean’s absence.

Applicants must currently be an associate or full professor with tenure at the University of Georgia

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification:

Relevant Experience
The successful candidate will:
• Have a documented history of mentoring and training graduate students in a thesis/ dissertation-driven graduate program
• Have a documented history in leadership and support of graduate education.
• Have broad knowledge of UGA and the relationship between its graduate education, research and service missions
