Job Details

The Painting Program in the Department of Art at the Tyler School of Art and Architecture at Temple University invites applications for an open rank tenure or tenure-track appointment in Painting and Drawing to start in Fall 2021. We seek an artist with a broad knowledge of historical and contemporary art practices, a thorough understanding of technical issues, and strong conceptual grounding in the medium and history of painting.

Building on a long tradition of painting as critical practice, the Painting Program at Tyler is committed to the advancement of artistic imagination and engagement in a changing world. We expect a candidate to have a dynamic painting practice, with professional accomplishments that include an active and engaged exhibition record, along with a demonstrated commitment to teaching. The Department’s faculty is a diverse community of scholars and makers who are working to reimagine art education for the contemporary world. It is our intention to find a colleague who will expand this academic diversity and who wishes to work closely and collaboratively to build on the program’s success.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach at all levels of our BFA undergraduate program, BA in Visual Studies, and MFA graduate program. Applicants should have a broad range of technical, conceptual and cross-disciplinary teaching skills. Classes will be mostly studio-based with some seminars focusing on theory and professional practice.

Tyler painting is a top-ranked program in an urban art school and we thrive on our faculty and students' inventive and visionary work. As part of a research university, we are as dedicated to creative making as we are to research, pushing the canons and discourses of artistic production. Tyler’s programs encompass a wide range of areas in the study of art, design, art history, art education and architecture. In each program, students work in small learning communities, while also benefiting from state-of-the-art facilities, a rigorous curriculum and a large, diverse campus community. In addition, the newly constructed Charles Library houses the Loretta C. Duckworth Scholars Studio as a space for student and collaborative research in digital humanities, digital arts, cultural analytics, and critical making.

Tyler School of Art and Architecture is located in Philadelphia, a city with deep artistic traditions in disciplines like painting, printmaking, photography, and fabrication, as well as a thriving contemporary art scene. Beyond Philadelphia, the city makes for an affordable and convenient home base to access other major cities with flourishing arts, culture and architectural communities.
