Professional Research Assistant

Linda Crnic Institute for Down Syndrome, School of Medicine

Nature of Work:

This full-time Professional Research Assistant position is a faculty research position with primary duties to conduct research and is not involved in the instructional program.  The position is not eligible for tenure.  An employee in this position can be terminated at any time without notice and severance pay may not be provided. 

The Professional Research Assistant will have diverse responsibilities. The primary activity will be the performance of cell culture, molecular biology, protein work, biochemical assays, RNA/DNA work, and laboratory management including; inventory/ordering, specimen/animal list keeping/update, hazardous/chemical waste inventory, protocol editing/creation.

 

Professional Field

The successful candidate will participate in ongoing projects investigating the role of heart and lung lymphatic vessels in patients/animal models with pulmonary hypertension, and Down syndrome, animal models of cardiopulmonary inflammatory diseases, and Down syndrome models investigating recurrent respiratory tract infections.

 

Supervision Received:

The PRA will report directly to the senior professional research assistant and the principal investigator within the Developmental Lung Biology Laboratory.

 

Supervision Exercised: 

The PRA will not be providing supervision of other PRA’s or State employees.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Major Laboratory duties: Responsible for harvest of rodent organs to include flushing, fixation, manipulations, digests, freeze backs, single cell suspensions, cell harvests, tissue/blood harvests. Responsible to learn molecular and biochemical assays required for experimental data acquisition. Responsible for interactions and sign up times with collaborators utilizing core facilities on campus. Competitive candidates will be interested in, and capable of, acquiring new technical skills.

Laboratory management:  Laboratory management- maintain chemical and sample inventory, oversee lab safety (e.g. maintain lab according to CUAMC regulations, assist with chemical waste removal), order supplies and collect invoices, participate in core lab responsibilities including cell culture core maintenance. Responsible for keeping track of animal harvest tissue inventory.

Data analysis:  Prepare database/spreadsheets, assist with statistical analysis and graphic presentations, and use data imaging software.

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $38,000 - $55,000.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

Qualifications
Minimum requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, molecular biology or related field
  • Relevant previous laboratory experience.
Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to work both independently and as a team member, with supervision of a principal investigator and current laboratory staff.
  • Self-motivated; highly organized, with demonstrated project planning and management skills in an academic research setting.
  • Working knowledge of molecular biology techniques for protein, RNA and DNA analysis.
  • Strong quantitative analysis skills, including statistics; excellent written and oral communication skills, and strong word processing skills.
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills, ability to manage multiple projects or requests. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.Positive attitude and the ability to work with a variety of biomedical investigators and colleagues. Ability to contribute to the growth and development of the Linda Crnic Institute and the Yeager lab.
