The Soga Lab at the University of California, Berkeley (UCB) is accepting applications for a post-doctoral researcher in the area of embedded systems design and control.

Appointment length:
This is a twelve month, 100% time appointment with the possibility of extension being subject to performance and budgetary approval. Anticipated start: October 2020 or until the position is filled.

Responsibilities:
This position focuses on the development of the control systems and software of a distributed fiber optic sensing (DFOS) system. This individual will use their strong skills in software development and hardware control to improve an already patented system. The specific tasks include (i) the design of software for the user interface, (ii) the design of control programs for the hardware, (iii) the design of a PCB for the integration of the electronics, (iv) and the design of an embedded system for onboard processing utilizing FPGAs or CPUs. Working closely with researchers on other DFOS projects at UCB, the researcher is expected to publish peer-reviewed articles, patents and to present findings at national and international conferences.

Basic Qualifications:
PhD (or equivalent international degree) or enrolled in a PhD degree program (or equivalent international degree) at the time of application.

Additional Qualifications (by start date):
  • PhD or equivalent international degree.
  • No more than four years of post-degree research experience.

    Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD in electrical engineering, embedded systems, parallel computing or related/relevant field.
  • Relevant experience as a sensor design researcher and/or hardware developer.
  • Data analysis, signal processing, and programming (e.g., MATLAB, Python, C, LabView).
  • Expert in on-board computing, especially parallel computing (e.g. FPGA).
  • Fluent in control and data platform software development.
  • Experienced in embedded system design, including models of computation and system level design methodologies.
  • Experience with troubleshooting and debugging prototype hardware/software.
  • Electronic design (analog and digital), PCB design, and fabrication.

    Salary:
    To be commensurate with qualifications and experience. This position provides full postdoctoral scholar benefits.
