Scope of Job:
The School of Art at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) seeks applications for an Assistant Professor appointment based on favorable evaluations) to start Fall 2021. An MFA in studio arts is required as well as at least 18 graduate credits in ceramics, a strong record of professional research, and a broad-based knowledge of ceramic technology and equipment. Teaching experience at the college level required. The applicant should have experience with electric and gas kilns, gas burners, clay mixing equipment, basic shop tools and shop safety procedures A large part of this position will involve the technical repair and maintenance of equipment, inventory, troubleshooting, and assisting students in the proper use of all equipment. Extensive knowledge and experience working with kilns, clay/glaze materials, and ceramic studio equipment is required. Expertise in traditional and non-traditional ceramic techniques and processes are required. Phone and computer skills are essential and familiarity with relevant 3-D software is a plus. Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds. The successful candidate will be assigned the standard academic teaching load for faculty.

The candidate will demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching, art program/curriculum development, and a willingness to promote the UTRGV ceramics program. The successful candidate must have good organizational and communication skills. The successful applicant will be able to build relationship with colleagues and K-12 educators in the Rio Grande Valley and demonstrate experience working with underrepresented populations and/or diversity initiatives. The successful candidate will teach on both the Brownsville and Edinburg campuses.

The successful candidate will be assigned the standard academic teaching load for an Assistant Professor. This can include undergraduate and graduate courses, supervision of student teachers, and/or curatorial projects. Involvement with interdisciplinary graduate programming, museum programming, and other teaching within the department is encouraged. In addition, the successful candidate may work closely with community-based arts education organizations and constituents in area public schools and will have the opportunity to develop new or revised offerings at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

The UTRGV School of Art has a 73,000-square foot facility (Edinburg) with the highest quality studios and labs in graphic design, sculpture, ceramics, painting, drawing, printmaking, digital photography and film photography with a wet lab. The School of Art also has a facility (Brownsville) with 20,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space with very unique 20-foot-high ceilings in all of their studios for optimum student art production in painting, ceramics, sculpture photography (digital and film), printmaking, drawing, and an iMac lab for computer imaging and graphics. There is a 3000-square foot outdoor open area for experimental art.

MFA from an accredited institution.


Discipline Specific Required Qualifications:
This position requires close collaboration with the Ceramic faculty and the department. The candidate will play an active role in the management of the area while maintaining standards as determined by tenure-tenure track ceramics faculty.
Applicants must present evidence of their potential to effectively teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels. They must supervise research activities of students. The successful candidate will have the breadth and knowledge to teach art foundation courses, ceramics at all levels, and other 3D courses. In addition to their area of specialty, the candidate will also be conversant in the historical and contemporary movements within the field of ceramics.


Preferred Qualification:
Experience working with a potter’s wheel.

Additional Information:
UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may
require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is
performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code
§51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of
Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least
135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement
Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week
and at least 135 days in length.

UT Brownsville and UT Pan American

The shared history of The University of Texas Pan American and The University of Texas at Brownsville goes back to 1927, when Edinburg College was founded. In 1973, Pan American opened a second campus in Brownsville, which later became an independent institution of The University of Texas System in 1991. Over the years, the missions and the identities of these great institutions have continually evolved to serve the communities of the Rio Grande Valley.
