Job Description

The MU Counseling Center is strongly committed to diversity and multicultural values. As a Center focused on multicultural competence, affirmation and inclusive excellence, the staff seeks like-minded professionals to join a team engaged the efforts to enhance campus services to better support all students for a one year appointment as a Post Intern/Post-Doctoral Psychology Professional (Psychology Resident).

The successful candidates will possess interests and experience in providing services which support the mission of an active university counseling center. The Counseling Center (https://counseling.missouri.edu/) is part of the larger Student Health and Wellbeing Unit (https://wellbeing.missouri.edu/), a single entity focused on personal well-being, offering additional opportunities for staff collaborations and training. The Center is an APA-accredited doctoral internship site and serves a growing culturally diverse and international student community.

This is a one year appointment open to early career applicants who will have either:

Completed a doctoral internship in psychology by the hire date in early August and possesses an ABD (all but dissertation) status. OR

Completed requirements for the doctorate in counseling or clinical psychology by the anticipated hire date in early August.

Duties include: initial evaluations; time effective individual counseling/therapy; group counseling; crisis intervention; outreach; and campus consultation. Opportunities for additional specialization (e.g., work with specific populations, clinical foci, etc.) may be available depending on availability of appropriate supervision and Center needs.

Also, the successful candidates will gain an appreciation for the unique role of a psychologist practicing within Student Affairs and on a college campus. The selected candidates will possess strong interpersonal, oral and written skills and a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, campus departments, and student groups. The selected candidates are expected to engage in services for a diverse client base and with diverse campus organizations. Respect for cultural, intellectual, psycho-social and interpersonal differences is expected to inform the selected candidates’ practice. Further, the selected candidates are encouraged to cultivate a) an appreciation for interpersonal flexibility with a sense of humor; b) an awareness of the importance of life balance; and c) an understanding the complexities of personal development within a higher education context.

Supervision and related information: Two hours of individual clinical supervision by a staff member, licensed at least 3 years, will be provided. The program is structured to provide approx. 2000 hours towards the supervised experience required for licensure in most states. A small amount of weekly time will be made available for professional development (to assist with degree completion, EPPP preparation, job search, etc.). A weekly post-doc support time is scheduled to allow for peer consultation and socialization.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of a doctoral internship by the start date is required. Prior counseling center experience (practicum or internship) and demonstrated commitment to engaging in practices to enhance cultural competence is also required.

Desired Qualifications

Experience providing: skills based interventions, complex anxiety management, brief therapy, and group therapy is highly preferred.
