Position Summary
The SSS Advisor provides comprehensive academic, personal, and career/graduate school advising and programming along with learning support, and campus and community referrals. The SSS Advisor must be culturally competent and able to work with a variety of students – first-generation, low income, underrepresented, varying abilities/disabilities, transfers, and those in crisis or scholastic difficulty. This position regularly requires the exercise of independent judgment and in-depth knowledge of various UO programs across campus.

This SSS Advisor position is currently configured and funded as a full-time, 12-month appointment.

Depending on the specific position a person is hired for advisors may specialize in financial aid, career counseling, or academic counseling.

Advisors must be able to work with first-generation, low income, underrepresented, and transfer students. They must be skilled in addressing the needs of re-entry students, students in crisis, and students experiencing scholastic difficulty. Advisors must exhibit professionalism and collegiality in a team environment, and have the ability to create a welcoming, inclusive, accessible, and professional atmosphere in the office. This person must exhibit cultural humility and agility, with the ability and commitment to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Minimum Requirements
• Master's degree.
• Two years of experience in a high school, college, university, counseling or similar setting providing academic advising, advising support, student services, career counseling, or counseling.

Professional Competencies
• A broad working knowledge of student development principles.
• Demonstrated understanding of issues facing diverse groups (e.g. low-socioeconomic, first generation, underrepresented students of color, non-traditional, and under-prepared individuals).
• Demonstrated strong written and oral communication skills.
• Strong evidence of ability to set operational goals from strategic plans.
• Demonstrated high-level organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and multi-task effectively in a fast-paced, detail oriented and time sensitive environment.
• Diligently attends to details and pursues quality in accomplishing tasks.
• Recognizes situations that warrant initiative and moves forward without hesitation; resolving issues, problems, or situations.
• Ability to anticipate next steps and execute independently.
• Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office Suite (or similar). Ability to produce professional correspondence, documents, data reports, and presentations.
• Demonstrated ability to work collegially and collaboratively with diverse internal and external constituencies.
• Knowledge of university policies and procedures.

Preferred Qualifications
• At least three years’ experience providing career advising in an education or college/university environment.
• Knowledge of University and/or community resources to assist individuals in meeting mental/physical health, financial, academic, and other basic needs.
• Experience administering and interpreting career assessments like the Strong Interest Inventory or similar career assessments.

The TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) program, located within UESS Office of Academic Advising, provides support to qualifying undergraduates (first-generation or low-income or those who have a documented disability recorded through the Accessible Education Center) to help them achieve their educational goals, including graduating from the UO. Focused on success, retention, and completion; SSS works closely with students of high-concern and high-risk to break down institutional and personal barriers to earning a UO degree.
