Be part of the School of Film, Media & Theatre’s growing faculty at Georgia State University, an enterprising R-1 university in Atlanta. Our next Assistant Professor in Performance Studies will play a central role in the School of Film, Media & Theatre’s contributions to Georgia State’s strategic goals of highlighting the arts and media as vital to the quality of all major cities and demonstrating that students from all backgrounds can achieve academic and career success at high rates. Opportunities for support include intramural research grants, summer funding, teaching release time, graduate research assistants, travel funds, and assistance in pursuing external funding.

The School of Film, Media & Theatre is part of the College of the Arts, which was established in 2016 and also includes the Ernest G. Welch School of Art & Design, the School of Music, the Center for Collaborative & International Arts (CENCIA), and the Center for Educational Partnerships in Music. In addition to offering some of the university’s most popular majors, the college connects faculty and students with Atlanta’s thriving arts scene, booming film and music industries, and a robust theatre environment that includes dozens of theatre companies.

Responsibilities

The selected candidate will join the graduate faculty of our doctoral program in Moving Image Studies, interacting with others who study film, television, and new media and teaching graduate seminars in performance studies/theory. They will also become part of the faculty in an undergraduate theatre program where they will teach courses in performance studies/theory and a course in theatre history. They will be responsible for maintaining an active research agenda and participating in service at the department, college, and university levels.

We are particularly interested in candidates who study the intersection of performance studies/theory and race. The selected candidate will guide the effort to diversify the School’s curriculum in performance/theatre studies, theory, and history as part of an ongoing effort across the School’s programs.

Qualifications

Essential Qualifications

• Ph.D. or M.F.A. or equivalent in Performance Studies, Theatre, or a related field (in hand by August 1, 2021);

• An emerging record of research;

• Experience in teaching at the university level

Preferred Qualifications

• An established record of research;

• Excellence in teaching at the university level;

• An established record of mentoring students, particularly from underrepresented groups

Degrees are offered at the bachelor’s, master’s, specialist and doctoral levels through six units: the College of Arts and Sciences, J. Mack Robinson College of Business, College of Education, College of Health and Human Sciences, College of Law and Andrew Young School of Policy Studies. In addition to the numerous degree programs, Georgia State offers full- and part-time programs and day, evening and weekend classes.

Students have many choices in extracurricular activities including more than 22 fraternities and sororities; and some 250 chartered student groups, including 60 degree-related student groups, seven religious, 24 law-oriented and 22 multicultural/international groups; and 10 honor societies. There is also an active student government association which includes the student senate and the judicial board.

The Georgia State Panthers are members of the Colonial Athletic Association and compete in 16 NCAA Division I intercollegiate men’s and women’s sports, including basketball, baseball, softball, golf, tennis, track and volleyball. The university announced in April 2008 that is will begin Division I-AA football in 2010.

The university’s innovative Touch the Earth program brings outdoor recreation ranging from backpacking, rock climbing, sailing, kayaking, rafting and water-skiing to out-of-state snow-skiing and snorkeling trips. And WRAS, Georgia State’s popular 100,000-watt radio voice, is the most powerful student-run radio station in the United States.
