Shimberg Center for Housing Studies Faculty Position
The University of Florida’s Shimberg Center for Housing Studies in the M.E. Rinker, Sr. School of Construction Management invites applications for one nine-month tenured or tenure-track faculty position in housing studies beginning in the fall of 2021.
Appointments are expected to be made at the associate professor or professor level, depending on experience and level of accomplishment. Expected credentials include a terminal degree in a related field, relevant academic and/or industry experience appropriate for the area of expertise, university-level teaching, proven ability to attract nationally-competitive research grants and disseminate research findings. In addition, the candidate should demonstrate leadership in multi-disciplinary research and be motivated to collaborate with other faculty across the College of Design, Construction and Planning and within other colleges in the University of Florida. Successful faculty candidates will be expected to develop funded research programs, publish in peer-reviewed journals, supervise graduate student research, teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses, and provide service to the University, the community, and the profession. The salary and benefits package for the position is very competitive, and includes a negotiated faculty development package.
The Shimberg Center was established by the Florida Legislature in 1988 as a research hub to facilitate the provision of safe, decent, affordable housing and related community development. The Center conducts research into housing policy and planning, with a special focus on housing affordability for Florida residents, including families, elders, and those with special needs. Current research topics include housing instability, particularly family and youth homelessness; preservation of affordable rental housing; linking housing, land use, and transportation decisions; shaping healthier and more energy efficient affordable housing by policy and design; homes and housing for the growing older adult population and people with special needs such as physical and cognitive impairments; and sustainable and equitable solutions to disaster recovery and climate resilience problems in housing policy. In addition, the Center’s Florida Housing Clearinghouse provides comprehensive housing supply and demand data for Florida’s cities and counties (https://flhousingdata.shimberg.ufl.edu).

The Shimberg Center currently has 6 full-time faculty and staff as well as graduate assistants and the Rinker School has 27 full-time faculty members, and offers Bachelor of Science, Master’s and PhD degree programs in Construction Management and Fire and Emergency Services. The College of Design, Construction and Planning is multi-disciplinary, and includes additional undergraduate and graduate programs in Architecture, Historic Preservation, Interior Design, Landscape Architecture, Sustainability and the Built Environment, and Urban and Regional Planning as well as several interdisciplinary research centers that focus on community and landscape planning, geographical information system-based research, health and the built environment, resilience, sea level rise, and sustainable construction.
