Essential Functions:
- Assist medical staff with preparation, examination, and procedure to include performing patient history interview to obtain personal data and chief complaint, documentation for records and vital signs.
- Provides patient care, referrals and documentation in outpatient clinic.
- Assists clinicians, administers treatments as prescribed by clinicians.
- Administers medications topically, sublingually, orally and by injection as prescribed by the clinician.
- Conveys clinical information on behalf of the clinician.
- Performs EKG and spirometry testing.
- Answers telephone, screens calls, takes messages and provides information.
- Performs simple lab and screening tests such as urinalysis, rapid strep, flu, mono tests throat and urine cultures.
- Collects blood specimens via capillary and venipuncture technique.
- Performs aseptic procedures such as wound care.
- Provides care of patients in observation unit including observing, reporting and documenting medical condition, administering prescribed medications, and aiding with activities of daily living.
- Setup, clean, restock and prepare exam rooms. Help to maintain medical equipment.
- Administers allergy injections as prescribed, reorders allergy serum, maintains treatment plans, and provides emergency assistance as or if needed.
- Communicates with patients regarding health prevention, health practices and self-care.
- Verifies compliance with state immunization requirements.
- Maintains confidentiality
- Manage infection control using aseptic techniques, chemical disinfection, and correctly handling bio hazardous materials.
- Participates in other SHS staff planning, projects, and programs such as health promotion, surveys and Division of Campus Life events.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Graduate from an accredited school of Medical Assisting; AAMA or RMA certification required.
- Current CPR/AED certification
- At least 2 years experience working in Urgent Care Office, Primary Care Office or Emergency Room or equivalent education and related training.
- Ability to effectively communicate and interact with multi-cultural populations
- Ability to observe, access, and record symptoms, reactions and progress.
- Knowledge of specimen collection, and testing
- Proficient in routine phlebotomy
- Knowledge of procedures and standards for administration of medication.
- Positive attitude, maturity, professionalism, dedication, flexibility, customer service skills required
- Ability to exercise skills in the area of initiative, problem solving, decision-making and multi-tasking
- Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care.
- Ability to maintain quality, safety and infection control standards.
- Ability to make decisions and judgments on sensitive, confidential issues. Maintain privacy of University and medical records.
- Ability to work collaboratively with SHS staff
- Ability to gain competency with electronic medical record software.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Experience in a primary care outpatient setting
- Experience working with college age population preferably at a campus health clinic
Accountabilities:
- Graduate from an accredited school of Medical Assisting; AAMA or RMA certification required.
- Complies with CLIA, OSHA and other applicable standards
