Counselor- Student Support Services

The Student Support Services Counselor oversees personal and mental health support for program participants and assists the Director and Academic Coordinator in the delivery of services to achieve program goals and objectives.  Student Support Services is a comprehensive academic and personal support program that aims to increase retention and graduation rates among students who are first-generation, low-income, or have a disability. The program provides academic and personal support services, including tutoring, academic advising, career counseling, financial literacy, post-graduate preparation, and mentorship services. 

Reporting to the Director, the Counselor collaborates with the Community Medical Center and other health care providers to deliver appropriate mental health support for SSS students and provides clinical care as allowed by their license or degree.  The Counselor informs the campus community and potential participants about the SSS project, interviews applicants and makes selection recommendations to the Director.  He/she completes the Academic Needs Assessment and Individual Educational Plan and monitors progress for a caseload of students.  The Counselor provides guidance on majors, minors and course selection decisions; assists with financial aid applications; provides career guidance; administers and interprets academic/career assessments; prepares monthly reports and assists the Director with program evaluation.  

The Counselor is an integral member of the Student Affairs division, providing operational support for programs and services under a cross-functional team strategy.  The Counselor collaborates with Student Affairs staff in the development of student support strategies aimed at increasing student retention; conducts workshops on topics supporting student success; supervises student office staff and student events, as assigned; responds to inquiries from students, faculty, staff, parents, and members of the community; serves on College committees and task forces; and performs other duties, as assigned.

Qualifications:  

Requires a Master’s degree in counseling, psychology, education or related field; minimum two-year’s experience as a program counselor or advocate; experience providing support for disadvantaged youth; commitment to serving individuals from multicultural backgrounds; strong interpersonal, communication and computer skills.

Prefer candidates with a Master’s in Social Work or licensed as a mental health counselor; evidence of a strong commitment to diversity and inclusivity; sensitivity to/understanding of multicultural needs and characteristics of the target population; effective verbal and written communication skills, computer skills and presentation skills; ability to work independently with little supervision.
